Equinties - what does it mean?

Gm, Equinauts
When they can answer this,
then we can assess whether the new regulations will be better or worse for punters.
Or view right now, is things could not get any worse so we’re open minded to whatever they propose.
Let’s dive in.
HEADLINE ROUNDUP
⁉️SO, WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
The newsletter was delayed yesterday because, just as we were about to hit send, news broke that the Gambling Commission had confirmed it will introduce financial risk assessments (affordability checks) for betting customers.
Nearly every one reading this article will know affordability checks are already carried out by bookmakers, so what’s new? Well, the Gambling Commission has now confirmed that a standardised system of Financial Risk Assessments (FRAs) will become mandatory across the industry,
unlike the current approach where bookmakers apply their own thresholds resulting in often absurd and highly intrusive demands for personal data.
This new law (for want of a better word) will use credit reference agency data to identify customers at risk of financial harm, with further information only requested where necessary.
The regulator says the new system will reduce the need for customers to submit financial documents, with the checks being introduced gradually and at higher thresholds than originally proposed.
While the Commission says this will create a more consistent and less intrusive process, the British Horseracing Authority and Betting & Gaming Council remain unconvinced arguing that the credit data used during the pilot was unreliable and fear many customers could still face unnecessary checks, restrictions or be driven to unregulated betting operators, potentially reducing betting turnover and damaging racing's finances.
So, what’s our view?
Firstly, the Gambling Commission does deserve a small bit of credit for attempting to replace today's unpopular checks. Bookmakers have been making customers bend over backwards to be able to deposit and play on their accounts. And that’s just the people who can be arsed to. Most don’t.
So while we feel the pilot period needs extending a little bit to ensure the data is accurate because if it does work, this could be huge. The real measure of success will be whether customers are asked to hand over fewer bank statements, payslips and the inside leg measurements of your whole family… and your ex’s.
The two if’s…
If the new Financial Risk Assessments achieves that, accounts will be active again and more customers will pick up the tools again.
But if they simply add another layer of checks before the same intrusive requests, the concerns raised by racing and the betting industry will prove well founded.
One additional point worth noting is that this approach could actually work in favour of serious punters. It is designed to identify bad gamblers doing their brains by rapidly depositing fresh money, while allowing experienced punters who might maintain a healthy balance (funded by previous winnings) to continue betting without repeatedly triggering the same thresholds.
🐎PRECISE
We’re only two months into the Flat season and already 2026 is shaping up to be one of the greatest seasons ever for Aidan O’Brien. He is on course to break his own record for Group 1 wins in a calendar year, and it might be with a little helping hand from PRECISE.
Arriving on the back of her Coronation Stakes success at Royal Ascot, PRECISE heads a field of seven in Friday's Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket and is expected to start favourite.
Her main challenger appears to be Andrew Balding's unbeaten BLUE BOLT, winner of the Duke of Cambridge Stakes at the Royal meeting, while Irish hopes are also represented by BALANTINA and JANCIS.
The field is completed by EVOLUTIONIST, VENETIAN LACE and VENOSA, who is expected to help set the pace for the favourite.
🏖️RACE TO THE TOP
SWEET WILLIAM has been retired! Unfortunately for him he won’t be enjoying himself in the covering barn he had his nuts off at 3 but nice days in the paddock doing f all await!
Owned by mega-GILF Philippa Cooper, SWEET WILLIAM won 7 races throughout his career, including back-to-back W’s in the Doncaster Cup in 2024 and 2025:
The son of SEA THE STARS established himself as one of Britain’s leading stayers for trainers John and Thady Gosden, finishing outside the first three only once in his career.
He was never able to land a big Royal Ascot pot, but SWEET WILLIAM competed in 3x Gold Cups, producing a PB when finishing third behind KYPRIOS in 2024.
He bowed out after another excellent season, winning the Sagaro Stakes before finishing runner-up in the Henry II Stakes and third in the Gold Cup behind SCANDINAVIA.
