HEADLINE ROUND UP
BLUE HENS
As announced earlier in the year, the Greek Shipping Niarchos Family would be selling some of their fillies and broodmares.
One of the jewels of their offerings was this six-year-old, ALBIGNA, by ZOFFANY who was a Group 1 winning 2yo in the Marcel Boussac, and in foal to recent Coolmore Champ ST MARKS BASILLICA. She sold for 3.7 million euros, to MV Magnier of Coolmore Stud who have always been close, Tom Magnier who runs the operation down under is godson to Maria Niarchos, the matriarch of the Niarchos operation.

Away from the track, her yealing colt by WOOTTON BASSETT was offered through Camas Park Stud at the Goffs Orby Sale in September and fetched €460,000 to the China Horse Club and Qatar Racing, so there is a fair level of backing behind her as a broodmare, also highlighted by her foal who is by Darley King Dubawi.
However, this purchase was only just the start for Coolmore as they parted ways with €6 million to pick up ALPINE STAR, a fellow six-year-old who won at the highest level for the Niarchos Family, as well as finishing a commendable second to PALACE PIER in the 2020 Group 1 Prix Jacques le Marois.

She won the Group 1 Coronation Stakes to start her season in 2020 before three consecutive Group 1 second place medals in France for Jessica Harrington including that Prix Jacques Le Marois effort. The Coolmore Partners have already pencilled ALPINE STAR in for a date with AUGUSTE RODIN when he retires next year.
“When the time comes, we'll probably send her to Auguste Rodin. When Auguste Rodin won the Derby, I'd say it was 30 seconds later when Dad [John] rang me and said, 'this is the most important thing that has happened to Coolmore since Galileo (Ire) won the Derby.'
“That horse has absolutely everything--from Deep Impact to his mother being a champion, his grandmother being a champion, he's a Group 1-winning two-year-old and he's a dual Derby winner, Breeders' Cup Turf and Irish Champions Stakes winner as well. He's everything we're looking for and, when the time comes after next year, we're going to really get behind him.” TDN 25th November.
ALPINE STAR, by SEA THE MOON is a half-sister to 2018 Cartier Horse Of The Year ALPHA CENTAURI. Speaking of ALPHA CENTAURI, she also made €6 million and also went the way of Coolmore. Multiple Group 1 winner and Irish Guineas winner, also trained by Jessica Harrington like her sisters, was sold in foal to SEA THE STARS. The 3 Queens sold for a staggering €15.7 million in the ring, they also amassed a few million on the racetrack as well.
In total, the Niarchos draft sold for €27million on the day. PAY DAY.
