Took little down time over the bank holiday while the racing was so bad, was perfect.
It’s a strange experience to get out of the racing ‘bubble’, even for just a day. You realise that 99.9% of normal people just simply wouldn’t even think about racing until what, the obligatory Grand National sweepstake at work? Yeh that’s probably it - every year, once a year Luisa from ‘back office’ predicts a horse's performance based on name and colours.
I’m jealous of the naivety of it all. Luisa is never going to get her heart broken on a Monday at 15.00 when her Moore horse falls at the Plumpton last 10 lengths in front.
Equally, she’ll never feel what it’s like to watch the beast of a horse you’ve got risk on run over the line first - whoosh! And I’m not talking about the horse whoosh, I’m talking about the dopamine drop - whoosh. Brain to body. Fuck it feels good. And you’re richer too.
I’m glad I’m in my little racing bubble. I can exit it any time and enjoy the world without racing but you know what - I don’t want to. I fucking love racing, I love the people you meet, I love the horses and obviously, I love making money.
Let’s dive in.

She nearly died in 2014 after a bad fall resulting in brain and spinal injuries. She retired from race riding and soon found work talking about racing instead but recently, having been made redundant from her onscreen role, she’s decided she’s going to own the screen.
A permanent state of rest
Joseph O’Brien’s globetrotting superstar, STATE OF REST, was retired with immediate effect this week after a Racing Victoria MRI scan revealed an issue with the horse.
We do not know what the issue is that has caused this sudden retirement – this complication potentially could have gone under the radar if he continued to race within the UK & Ireland and was not forced into an MRI - could be a blessing in disguise.

The four-time Gr1 winner was set to travel to Australia to defend his Cox Plate title in October, however, a mandatory scan by Racing Victoria showed that he was unable to pass the necessary protocols to race in the £2,941,644 contest.

Kev loses the big guns
Sheikh Abdullah Almalek Alsabah, the owner of JUAN DE MONTALBAN, has taken his string of 24 horses away from young trainer Kevin Philippart de Foy after a disagreement between the pair.

The Kuwaiti royal family member was looking for the Newmarket-based operator to become his private trainer after dispersing his horses between the likes of Andrew Balding, Richard Fahey, and David O’Meara for a few years.
Philippart de Foy said this was “not the way I am looking to go”, so the prominent owner hoisted his horses away from the yard – a big loss for the stable, especially after the promising runs from the £500,000 CADILLAC, a Listed winner in Ireland when previously with Jessica Harrington.
1/16 jolly turned over
There are a few trainers I know that could quite easily get a 1/16 shot beat, and Roger Varian is on that list. Well, he delivered in fantastic style earlier as his 1/16 shot BROADSPEAR was beaten by Shaun Lycett’s PAINLESS POTTER in a novice stakes race at Chepstow yesterday. Easily too!

This defeat ranks as one of the shortest-priced losers in British racing history, something jockey David Egan won’t be putting on his CV anytime soon, especially when the winner was sporting a career record of 0-15.
