Our first bet back since the resumption of racing after Her Majesty’s funeral landed yesterday, a nice 5/2 place double. Woof.

As usual, we’ve had good word all season from Eve’s lot, but our new Hughes link has been a welcome surprise addition to our betting circle and landed us some big bets on the likes of BG P grad, MERLINS BEARD, KNEBWORTH and SPACE TRACKER. (The exciting thing is, Hughes has been spending some big money at the recent sales so next year looks bullish for BGP Capital members who’ll be active in the betting Discord.

The double yesterday carries on the bullish sequence of 1’s which started Saturday and we’re pressing on today with a couple of good bets. If you’re banking money – join BGP Capital. The fund is so close to hitting that ‘sweet spot’ I mentioned yesterday (will probs hit it today) and that only increases the chances of hitting some good things at the sales.

Headline Roundup

BUSSELTON gets the J’OB done

The intern tells me we need to give a mention to Listowel today…?

He says a horse called BUSSELTON was lucky to win the Kerry National (giving Joseph O’Brien his second consecutive win in it) and Shark Hanlon’s HEDWIG or HEWICK, something like that (sounds like something from Harry Potter), ‘should have won instead’. The intern was talking quickly and panting but mentioned ‘a fucking massive performance’…’like carrying suitcases’…’Gold Cup horse’. I think he needs to chill tf out.

HEWICK, this year’s Galway Plate successor, was running off 163 yesterday, that’s 10lbs clear of Willie Mullins’ EL BARRA who was the next highest-rated in the field and a full 21 pounds more than the eventual winner – if he had stood up at the last and won, you can assume he would have been given a good few pounds by the handicapper. By this logic, is HEWICK or HEDWIG a Grade 1 chaser in the making?

The Shark confirmed on Twitter that both horse and jockey are okay after the tumble and he will be aimed for the American Grand National at Far Hills, New Jersey, next month.

Elsewhere at Listowel

Across the rest of the card, Willie Mullins’ NO RISK NO FUN secured a debut success over hurdles yesterday. The son of NO RISK AT ALL was a bit ‘novicey’ over a few of the hurdles and tended to jump out to his left, which can be expected on his first run over obstacles, but under the guidance of Paul Townsend he continued on to win by an easy 10 lengths.

Despite it not being a flawless run, it was very satisfactory but by no means ‘rocket’ class like some (hot) voices on racing Twitter called him.

#(For perspective, this run was a full six and a half seconds slower than AMIR KABIR’s win in a novice event for Gordon Elliott 35 minutes later.).

And finally, the Twitter horse of the day got his chasing career off to a horrendous start as BARDENSTOWN LAD, a horse some people already had already backed for the National Hunt Chase, was beaten comfortably by Henry De Bromhead’s LIFE IN THE PARK. It’s amazing to think some people's Cheltenham acca’s are down before the season has even started.

John McConnell’s seven-year-old was nearly 30 lengths behind in fifth after making hard work of the fences early on – some firms have already pushed his price out to 33/1 for the 3m6f contest at Cheltenham all the way in March.

Fairyhouse September Sale: Day two

Pretty uninspiring stuff yesterday but I’ll try and make it sound exciting… Checkbooks were brought out and hands were waved on the final day of the Tattersalls Fairyhouse September sales yesterday as Alex Elliott, buying for owners in Australia, wen tin big for a New Bay colt. Feeling pumped yet? Nah me neither tbf.

The sellers, Tradewinds Stud, made a €91,000 profit as Alex Elliott spent €115,000 to secure the yearling. Out of a half-sister to the Gr1 winner OPINION and Gr3 winners FOX HUNT and ANAM ALLTA, he has a brilliant pedigree going forward.

Elsewhere, Highflyer Bloodstock, the team who secured this year’s Tattersalls Ireland Super Auction Stakes winner STREETS OF GOLD for Eve Johnson Houghton, was back making himself busy yesterday as he made two €100,000 purchases.

INNS OF COURT filly:

He purchased an INNS OF COURT filly early in the sale, who will run in the double green colours for Simon Munir and Isaac Souede, and a colt by SIOUX NATION, both sold by Tally-Ho.

Risk on

No real size moved today as no word, so low stakes but should be accurate based on form.

15.00 HOLLOWAY BOY

Form to beat and generously priced at 9/4 against a Godolphin horse taking a lot of the market and the unexposed NOSTRUM. Half bet at 9/4.

15.55 LONG STAY & 17.02 FUJI ROCKS

Small double on two of Fergal’s at Perth. LONG STAY has had a long time off but has the form to beat and Fergal should, like his bumper horses, have this one ready to go. FUJI ROCKS is the best bred for this bumper and Fergal has them ready first time up. Small bet on at 9’s.

20.15 CITY VAULTS

Hacked up on the bridle lto. Shocked this guy is 6/5 now, should be odds on and is leverage today.
