Although we feel there should definitely be some form of regulation over how much people can bet (we’re thinking young people betting more they can afford), the current proposal of checks isn’t the answer and everyone should be signing this:

Let’s dive in.

HEADLINE ROUND UP

DOWNPOUR

Down Royal’s Grade 1 card across Friday and Saturday has been postponed to next weekend due to areas of standing water on the track. The two-day card was set to see GERRI COLOMBE make his seasonal reappearance in the Grade 1 Ladbrokes Champion Chase, though that will have to be put on hold for another week.

Many parts of Northern Ireland are already flooded thanks to 25mm of rain on Tuesday night and with the nearby River Lagan set to rise over the next 48 hours, course officials had the foresight to cancel the meeting in good time, rearrange it and ensure anyone with a ticket can go to the new date. That’s good work.

This abandonment adds to a string of recent similarities, none more recent than at Fakenham yesterday who had to call off their meeting after one race due to two horses slipping in their opening contest and Lingfield today which is sad as we had the 12/1 bumper winner lined up.

FAST BLOOD

The full brother to BATTAASH, THE ANTARCTIC, will stand at Castlehyde Stud in 2024 having been retired from the track by connections.

The three-year-old by DARK ANGEL had an attractive profile on the track thanks to his high-profile big brother, and he managed to show this ability when landing two Group 3 contests as well as three good runs in defeat behind then-stablemate BLACKBEARD as a juvenile.

Out of the LAWMAN mare ANNA LAW, BATTAASH never made it to the shagging shed as he was gelded in June 2016 prior to his four Group 1 victories on the track for trainer Charlie Hills. THE ANTARCTIC therefore looks like an interesting prospect as a stallion, though his stud fee has yet to be announced.

On stud fee’s, one stud fee for 2024 that has been announced is SEA THE MOON’s as he will stand for a career-high fee of £32,500 at Lanwades Stud.

The son of SEA THE STARS had a good year thanks to his German Classic double with FANTASTIC MOON in the Deutsches Derby and MUSKOKA in the Preis der Diana; these two successes added to his seven total individual Group winners for 2023.

BRUISED DREAMS

This weekend is set to be a big weekend for Simon & Ed Crisford at the Breeders’ Cup with CARLA’S WAY setting the standard in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies’ Turf on Friday. However, ALGIERS, their big plot for the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, will miss his Californian date with destiny having sustained bruising on his right fore.

The injury has been reported as a “minor” one, and some suggest that he may even be okay by the weekend, but connections don’t want to risk running him and he will be aimed for a winter in Dubai. One to follow!

YOUNG BLOOD

16.00 NEWCASTLE

STAINCLIFF by first season sire ADVERTISE made a promising debut on the turf, the form looks ok with the winner having had 3 runs and the third has been beaten in to 6th nto. Cost 200k, improvement likely but the sire is badly struggling.

LOU LOU’S GIFT by LOPE DE VEGA is a half sister to Gr3W MIGHTY ULYSSES. Made an ok debut, winner of that race looks good and probably wins the Listed race on Friday at Newmarket.

ROSA APPLAUSE by first season sire BLUE POINT makes his debut, market vibes look strong. He’s a Rabbah homebred, dam won twice at 2. Keep on side.

MRS MORRELL is a 180k Breeze Up purchase by Zoustar, market to guide.

BEAUTY APPEAL by INVINCIBLE SPIRIT, cost 235k, dam was a Gr3W, second dam is the dam of Champion 2yo RUMPLESTILTSKIN (dam of Champion Tapestry), and the dam of Champion LOVES ONLY YOU.

AYURVEDA interestingly was bought by Champion Australian Trainer Chris Waller, put in to training with James Ferguson she’ll no doubt end up in Australia but makes her debut today. O/o an old mare, market to guide.

HAVANA BALL looks a real speedy 2yo type, surprised we haven’t seen her out until today. Dam won at 2, by HAVANA GREY, dam a half sister to VINTAGE CLARETS who was third in the Coventry S.

Verdict: ROSA APPLAUSE has a speedy pedigree, trainer(s) can get one ready on debut and the yard is in form. HAVANA BALL could be an ew option at a big price but market suggests she’s either not very good or will need the run.

16.05 STRATFORD

A race for young fillies so anything can happen but we’ll read the pedigree’s as normal.

Market undecided on the fave, with Kings ROCKOLA and Owen’s LOVE TREE flip flopping. Former has a nice pedigree and is a half to a bumper winner.

Latter, LOVE TREE has a nice flat pedigree but might lack the stamina for today and her full sister wasn’t any good. One to take on and possibly lay.

DAMEOFTHECOTSWOLDS should be feared as Nige is in banging form and they target bumpers. Half to a bumper winner and sire produced bumper winner EARLOFTHECOTSWOLDS for yard. Danger.

LA MARQUISE is interesting for Snowden. By a new French sire who is by MARTALINE (one of our Dave’s), Jamie Snowden was kind enough to give us a comment on this girl who he bought from France BEFORE her half bro MISTER POLICEMAN won for Mullins and got Racing X stirring for the Festival. He said “she is big and strong and has a bright future ahead of her… we liked the mare”.

Daly should have a winner in BOWENSPARK (lev?) and he’ll be hoping for a double with MISS MINK. She hasn’t got the most appealing pedigree and is a little too short in the market but she could place.

FLIGHTTOTHESTARS could outrun big odds, the others might struggle today.

Verdict: we don’t think LOVE TREE will like todays conditions and she’s taking a lot of the market. In our view it’s between Kings, Owen’s and Snowdens. Would put anyone off a 6x combo tricast paying 50’s to 70’s.

LA MARQUISE 5/1 is our ew selection.

TODAYS BEST STATS

One stat today:

Honeyball has only sent two hurdlers to Stratford, a 50% sr. He also lands 1 in 3 with handicap debutants. SMART CASUAL 14.55 fits the bill. JP owns so he’ll decide if it’s off but if he is, on bumper form, will carry this lot. He is undoubtedly a plot but whether he’s off today, the money will tell. Either bolts up or comes last, saved for another day.

RISK ON

Annoying the Lingfield bumper isn’t on as we had that wrapped up so instead we will play the bumper single small ew and a stupid bet on the 70/1 tri-cast.

If there is money for the stat horse currently 5’s, then follow it as on pedigree he is standout - it just might not be a ‘going’ day.

CALIFORINA DREAMIN’

9pm Saturday is going to be a big tussle between the juveniles at Santa Anita. It’ll be the sprint and three Royal Ascot winners line up.

Windsor Castle winner BIG EVS, Norfolk winner VALIANT FORCE and the Queen Mary filly CRIMSON ADVOCATE.

Amongst the big Ascot names, the race also includes Lowther second CHERRY BLOSSOM, Sirenia Stakes winner STARLUST and Coventry and Middle Park fourth GIVEMETHEBEATBOYS.

George Weaver saddles 3 in the race; aforementioned CRIMSON ADVOCATE who is sporting the Wathnan Racing colours, NO NAY METS who is by juvenile champ NO NAY NEVER and was last seen down the field in the Norfolk as well as AMIDST WAVES.

SLIDER is the most prominent American in the market, trained by John Sadler he cost a cool $240,000 as a breezer.

Verdict: Let’s be patriotic. BIG EVS could be hard to catch from stall 4, the son of BLUE POINT is the 11/4 market leader and he is definitely the best 2yo in Britain. GIVEMETHEBEATBOYS is the eachway hedge, 12/1 with most firms.
