Equinties - same old BHA

Equinties

The majority of this newsletter is pretty much centered on the continued faux pas from the head of racing, the BHA.

In March it was new whip rules and airbrushing photos, today it's inaction against people trying to kill the sport and stopping horses running because of pricing action.

I feel like if the BHA carry on down their current calamitous path of suicidal decision making then two things will happen, either racing dies a slow death or forced change.... like the wilds own adaptation to survive.

The latter is obviously what the sport needs. Take for instance F1. Bernie changed it for the better. He founded Formula One Constructors Association give the teams a voice against the FIA who had a stranglehold on the sport. TV rights, sponsorships and every other revenue stream suddenly came flooding back to the people who added value to the sport and as such became one of the biggest sports in the world. Love him or hate him, Bernie changed the sport and made it the globe-trotting circus it is today.

Does racing need it's own Bernie? Maybe...

On that thought, let's dive in but don't forget, there is a big bet today. Play your bets (I trust you all follow risk on if you had any sense, after all that's why you're here) and control the betting chimp for the other races by joining our league. QHZ36G.

Now, let's dive tf in.

Headline roundup

If the BHA wont do anything...

If your morning alarm didn’t get you up yesterday morning, the blow up on Racing Twitter surely did as Good Morning Britain, an ITV production from the same channel that hosts the sole terrestrial TV rights to horse racing, invited an animal rights activist from Animal Rising onto the show to talk exclusively about how horse racing is wrong.

An massive open goal for Animal Rising.

But where is the due impartiality from GMB? For a structured and non bias conversation to happen there needs to be two sides. Poor form from ITV.

The BHA need to come out their ivory towers and respond in their own way. If they cant get on the GMB show, I'm damn sure the Opening Show will have them on!

The tweet alone from the GMB Twitter profile, there were 450+ retweets and 4.2 million views. Crazy numbers about a topic that reads so negatively about the sport.

To put these numbers into context, the Dubai World Cup was won by Japanese raider USHBA TESORO this year. To Racing TV, a Japanese horse that wins a race like the Dubai World Cup is huge for their social media profiles. The tweet celebrating his win got less than an-eighth of the impressions the GMB tweet got.

What happened after this? Well, in response to the lack of action from the BHA, some racing personalities thought 'f*ck this' and founded STAND UP FOR RACING as an emergency response to the attack from Animal Rising.

Working with leading professionals of the racing and breeding game, the Racing Twitter profile was created and will be enlisting the help of major personalities in the game to help fight the battle for horse racing.

Give the account a follow and do what you can to share horse racing in a positive light... in the meantime I'll have a think about what BGP Capital and the Equinties newsletter can do to add value to Stand Up For Racing.

Gamble stopped… literally

Sean Curran’s ACES FULL was ordered to be withdrawn from a novice handicap chase yesterday having been gambled from 14/1 to 9/4 at Exeter.

The eight-year-old has raced eight times, twice in point-to-points and six times on the track having failed to finish in the same postcode as the winner on all of his rules starts.

The horse is owned by his cousin Joe English but has been leased to Sean and runs under his ‘other name’ of John Curran. He saw plenty of support before he was eventually deemed a NR from the contest.

The “flabbergasted” trainer said: “I have put a lot of work into this horse and all that time and money has been wasted now. I thought he would win today, although I was a little concerned by the horrible weather at Exeter. Joe would have backed the horse I'm sure, but he’s retired so I don’t believe he would have had a lot of money on. We are not a big stable and we need winners like this to make ends meet.

“It makes me think the BHA has just taken action this time because the bookmakers have been concerned about the gamble.”

Rough for connections, very rough but what happens now - are the BHA just going to pull every big market mover? What if we tip something and it's slammed? This does not make sense.

The BHA seem to be shooting themselves in the foot a lot atm but this is something else. Let the horses race and if they shit up having been massively backed and it obviously stinks, then reprimand the trainer after. They cant do it before the race, its insane.

Bumper previews

Southwell

Two at Southwell today, weirdly in the middle of the card (bumpers should always be at the end imo).

The first division market is headed by Hendo horse MADAM RYDER. Part owned by Harry Redknapp, the drift is bearish (6/4 put to 10/3) and given connections like a big punt, the sell off could be telling. So what's being backed? Well the money is coming for Daly's horse WYENOT. 8's into 4's, this filly is well bred being a half to some highly rated NH horses and she carries a feather weight (allowance for age and the 7lbs claim of Alice Stevens) so she'll be running free today. She might need the allowances at 4 though, they're weaker than 5yo typically.

Division 1 summary: There are a few nice ped's in this race including Twiston-Davies ANNA OF ANNANDALE making the race highly competitive to the eye. It wont be a betting race but if i had to hand my hat on one, it would be 10/1 ANNA OF ANNADALE.

For division 2 preview, see below.

Risk on

15.35 LITTLE MISS DANTE

Strong word for this girl two weeks ago when she was made a NR, but yard bullish again. She'd also be the bumper pick anyway. It's a nice little mares heat with some nice NH ped's but it's the ages which make Olly Murphy's the bet. She's 5 so will be stronger than 4 yo's. The other 5yo's in the race haven't got as good a pedigree as her. Olly Murphy knows her family well as this girl is a half to the yard's good horses in 5x winner ANGEL OF HARLEM and bumper winner GO DANTE for same connections. This is max bet for me at 11/10.

But what is a max bet? It's not all your damn betting bank that's for sure. None of this eating beans for dinner if it loses, yeh it makes for a somewhat humorous comment but we do worry sometimes.

A max bet is the maximum stake you're allowing for risk on a horse, typically measured in % terms. Keep a 5k betting bank? 1% might be your standard full bet, so £50 staked and £25 for a half bet. Using this as a rule of thumb, max bet's shouldn't exceed 5% of your total bank meaning £250 max on this horse.

If you want to take punting seriously and use racing as a value add to your life, keep a betting bank, protect it at all times (none of this 'ah we're on a bull run, I'll stick a few stupid bets on') and stick to risking the % stakes, upping notional as the bank grows. Betting banks will change your punting forever.

The TOTE FANTASY features the slop at Nottingham today and we're playing. We will also post a slop place pot using the TOTE.
