HEADLINE ROUNDUP

BURKEY VS FAHEY

If it’s not Karl Burke winning with a first time out 2yo, it’s Richard Fahey. Levels above any other standard up North, the two Northern 2yo specialist heavy weights have provided great entertainment (and betting opportunities) this season and their entries in the 14.40 make it undoubtedly the race of the day.

Fahey won the race last year and has the favourite MOVING FORCE to try do it again. MOVING FORCE won well lto and the trainer comments were he’d come on for the run.

But he’s not going to have it all his own way, for the mighty combo of Wathnan and Burke have a big money entry in SHAREHOLDER.

Big bull of a colt, SHAREHOLDER is by a serious stallion in NOT THIS TIME who has really upgraded his mares in America. This lads dam is a sister to GALE FORCE TEN who was placed in the Norfolk and Middle Park.

He’s walks like a beauty and breezed fast, he went from a $62k yearling to a €460k 2yo in France. Norm’s 2yo to follow.

PURPLE HIGHS AND LOWS

Ahead of the Epsom Derby, plenty of people were giving a chance to the Ballysax Stakes winner DALLAS STAR as that race is a good pointer towards Britain’s richest contest.

We didn’t side with him on the day, but we appreciated his ability, especially on softer ground.

His fans will have to wait a while to see him again as Amo Racing have sadly ruled him out for the season. Trainer Adrian Murray confirmed that the setback was sustained during the Epsom Derby, as he said: “Dallas Star picked up a bit of an injury unfortunately and I’d say he won’t run again now this year.

“I know the ground had gone a bit quick for him, but he’s a better horse than that.”

As for Amo Racing’s Royal Ascot team, one of their headline acts will be BUCANERO FUERTE in the Commonwealth Cup.

He is looking to become the second Irish-trained winner of the race and he got his season off to a good start as he won the Group 3 Lacken Stakes while giving 3lbs away to GIVEMETHEBEATBOYS.

Trainer Murray said: “He's in a few races but he'll go over six in the Commonwealth Cup against the three-year-olds. That's the way we're thinking at the moment anyway. He's in mighty form and we're all looking forward to it.

"We were thrilled with him at Naas. He stuck his neck out and battled. He's a serious horse and I think he is only going to get better as the season goes on. He's a great one to have in the yard and hopefully there are a few big days in him this season."

VOYAGE ON

The history books will have the winner of this year’s Epsom Derby as CITY OF TROY.

This fact is physically ingrained into the trophy as well as the minds of us racing fans, but something that is bound to be a ‘racing trivia’ question for years to come is ‘who was first past the post?’ in the 2024 renewal of the Derby.

And for those of you who may not remember, the answer to that question is Richard Hannon’s VOYAGE, though he did cross the line without Pat Dobbs who was shipped from the saddle as the gates opened.

With just two ‘runs’ under his belt, the three-year-old by GOLDEN HORN is a horse that retains plenty of potential, and connections have decided on his next target.

Trainer Richard Hannon said: “It was a bitter disappointment for everyone, not least Julie Wood who has always wanted a Derby runner, but the horse is absolutely fine, and is definitely heading to Ascot for the King Edward VII Stakes.”
