Equinties - new territory

MASTER MILLINER at 25’s on the Friday,

and the 18/1 ‘brother double’ on the Saturday,

it’s safe to say our Glorious Goodwood was indeed ‘Glorious’.

Let’s dive in.

HEADLINE ROUNDUP

WINNING BROTHERS

Britain has always had a knack of producing world class brothers - the England and Manchester United had the Neville brothers, the Brownlee’s dominated the Triathlon, the Young brothers tore it up in on the turf for England rugby and of course the Murray brothers were always a joy to watch in tennis… the list of great brothers goes on, as far back as history.

But there were two brothers competing Saturday who would have gone under nearly everyone’s radar…

unless you read this newsletter.

In the first two races of Glorious Goodwood final day, full siblings AL AASY and ALIGN THE STARS both won.

Starting with AL AASY, his success in the Group 3 Glorious Stakes was – on the face of it – fun. For so long, it looked as if Jim Crowley had found another piece of race-ending trouble as he sat up the rear of RELENTLESS VOYAGER, but the veteran rider squeezed his mount through the tightest of gaps to win oh very snugly in the end.

The SEA THE STARS gelding is seven now, but some might say that from the manner of the way he did it, that that was a big personal best for him.

He has no further entries, but he should step up in class again now. Unfortunately for him, there are no Group 2/1 races over 1m4f in the UK left. Something at Group 3 level like the Geoffrey Freer, September Stakes or Cumberland Lodge could work, though stepping up in trip for the Irish St Leger could also be a possibility if he gets his conditions.

As for his full brother ALIGN THE STARS, he did enough to win off 99 (his third win in three races) and connections might step him up in trip nto. Horses were closing on him fast at the end (we’ll speak about one later) so he might have done his winning for now but we’re happy to have caught him on ‘his’ day.

NEW TERRITORY

Last year we had ACE IMPACT, and while he doesn’t have the same weight on his shoulders, LAZZAT shares his unbeaten characteristic as the three-year-old by TERRITORIES won yesterday’s Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest.

He has been somewhat of a revelation this year as his debut only came in January 2024, but now he is has successfully pillaged a Group 1 and this TERRITORIES is quickly exploring new territory as a potential superstar.

Out of the Kempton maiden winner LASHYN, this home-bred really doesn’t have a fashionable pedigree and TERRITORIES really needed this horse.

It just goes to show that dreams can be made from the most unlikely of places.

WEEKEND EYE-CATCHERS

RUMSTAR – SATURDAY 15.35 GOODWOOD

It’s easy for us to say as we kept our eyes on him, but RUMSTAR had a rough route through the Stewards’ Cup.

He was very well-backed before the off and travelled like he’d easily reward his confident backers -he was on the bridle three furlongs out and he was going with similar venom one furlong later.

However, LETHAL LEVI and MR WAGYU did their best impressions of a slice of bread as the four-year-old by HAVANA GREY was the filling in a mid-race sandwich.

After he was stopped, he stayed on, but the damage was done by that stage and he couldn’t make up the deficit.

When you also consider that the stands’ side had a much bigger advantage (five of the first seven home were drawn 20 or above), RUMSTAR’s performance can be massively upgraded.

ROWAYEH – SATURDAY 17.20 GOODWOOD

It’s pretty fair to say that Owen Burrows had plotted ROWAYEH back to Glorious Goodwood, but his plan just came up short.

The four-year-old filly by DUBAWI had to battle mid-race in order to have a clear run at things, and once things opened up, she made a move for the lead.

In the end, she had a bit too much to do over nine furlongs (considering she’s raced mainly over eight) and Crowley knew that as well.

An easier route through her next race or a return to a mile may benefit her in time, but she has a win in her soon, that’s for sure.

RISK ON

A horrible days racing with perhaps only one worthwhile (and small!) play:

18.55 ALAZWAR

Ridden cold and given too much to do lto, he’d have gone close if more prominent. This class 5 should be well within his compass on ground he'll love. A small bet at 7/2.
