HEADLINE ROUND UP
MARKET GIFT
Shortly before yesterdays 13.05 Leicester, the hot favourite APPLE AWAY, a Grade 1 winner over hurdles last season, took a bit of a walk in the market which was duly noted by racing personalities.

Despite this, the 6yo obliged to beat MAKIN’YOURMINDUP, a Grade 2-winning hurdler, by 31 lengths on her second run over fences to the delight of many Old Gold Racing owners.

Yesterday’s test at Leicester saw her upped in trip by a furlong compared to her Haydock third and on heavy ground rather than soft, so her prominent stamina trait was on display. This was also shown to good effect at the top of the home straight as she was able to dictate at her pace – rather than the quick pace shown by GREY DAWNING last month – allowing her jumping to improve at a speed she was comfortable with.
With this in mind, where might her end-of-season target be?
As Peter Scudamore eluded to post-race, she has plenty of targets thanks to the mares program, but she also looks to stay forever at a constant pace. This year’s Brown Advisory could be quite a hot contest and yesterday’s form might not be one to hang your hat on, so the jury is still out on whether she can mix it in a Brown Advisory division.
In what might be a wild idea, why not the National Hunt Chase if that looks to be slightly weaker?
On a separate note, her wide-margin success gives GREY DAWNING a form boost ahead of his race at Cheltenham on Friday (12.40).

Declarations came in for Friday at Cheltenham yesterday and the Cross Country is set to have three separate Grade 1 winners thanks to MINELLA INDO, GALVIN, and FURY ROAD.
The former and latter have yet to give the Cheltenham banks course a spin, though GALVIN is slowly becoming a Cross Country regular thanks to his second at the Festival and eighth in November.
Two of the three are trained by Gordon Elliott though the contest is without DELTA WORK after he came back from his outing in November lame.

All three will likely be aimed towards the Cross Country Chase in March, but as for Friday’s race, it is probably GALVIN that comes with the most upside. He is experienced and, as shown by his previous seasons, will be a better horse with a run under his belt. He was dropped 3lbs by the British handicapper to 157, just one pound above stablemate FURY ROAD, so he can be a class apart.
As for the rest of the field, LATENIGHTPASS has to be respected at the head of affairs after his second last month to FOXY JACKS and extra experience around Cheltenham will help him.
At a slightly bigger price, ENJOY D’ALLEN could feasibly be well-handicapped on old form with his current mark of 141 and he has been over the Grand National fences, so he is no stranger to a test like this.
MARINE NATIONALE
Although he hasn’t been seen since his Supreme victory, MARINE NATIONALE was seen for the first time yesterday.

And it’s not too far away until we potentially see him race as trainer Barry Connell is planning to bring him out at Christmas. He said: "He does go on soft ground but we felt running him on that ground first time out wasn't the right thing to do.
“The original plan was to go there and then on to the Grade 1 at Christmas, then the Irish Arkle and Cheltenham so we said we'd wait until Christmas and go to the beginners' chase instead.” Currently, MARINE NATIONALE is the co-favourite at 11/4 with FACILE VEGA, though he got the better of him comfortably in the Supreme.

Is there any reason this form should be reversed?
YOUNG BLOOD
We tried to be heroes and took on the Nicholls hot pot fave yesterday and came away with a money back third. Todays bumper is deceptive - looking weak on paper but tough when you look into their blood.
NEWCASTLE BUMPER
GET A SUPERSTAR is looking relatively exposed and his lto 2nd isn’t strong form. One for handicaps down the line and to take on today despite his strong market position 9/4.
TIGGA TIME has the pedigree and trainer to go well. Should be in the money.
ROEBUCK BAY is a filly and might struggle against the boys. That said, her last time out effort is arguably better than GET A SUPERSTAR and better bred so pricing wrong.
ILITCH has been sent over here by the Crawfords in search of a weak race. This is weak but probably not weak enough.
HELSGETAWAY has a nice pedigree by GETAWAY and out of a bumper winning and black type mare. Related to several bumper winners. Sire okay for this race. Problem might be he’s not ready as yard take time with horses.
TEES COMP’S CLIVE reps the Tee’s Components lot who don’t struggle with giving their horses really shit names. Pedigree of this one will really suit this race but we just wish it was trainers by someone else. That said, in the slop we think he might be able to place and at 4.0 on machine top 3 could be a good side bet.
The other three can’t win.
Verdict: Could take on fave with several in this making GET A SUPER STAR a lay. The horses to take him on with are Sandy’s, Ruth’s, Lucinda’s and Gillian’s with the latter, Gillian’s TEES COMP’S CLIVE a possible top 3 bet if you can trust the trainer.
RISK ON
14.15 TOM CODY
Ran well on chase debut lto and can win this race today with the ground no problem on pedigree. NR’s have ruined this race so need to add to another, perhaps FIERCLEY PROUD to make her 2/1.
