Conscious this might be the biggest understatement in racing history, but JP really knows what he's doing doesn't he. He had a pretty big Easter...bigger than BGP Capital (which I didn't think was possible).
Huge day for BGP Capital. Two big bets landed whilst I was stood in a field.

JP's new purchase, Hendo cast-off I AM MAXIMUS, goes and wins JP's favourite race, the Irish Grand National.
Not only did I AM MAXIMUS win JP's favourite race, but Townend's ride will no doubt be remembered by JP as his favourite ride ever on one of his horses.
An Easter weekend to remember for @WillieMullinsNH & @PTownend 👊

In a sport where horses get the lions share of credit (as they should) Townend can say he won this race. It was remarkable. It was so good that AP McCoy was quick to name it 'as brilliant a ride as I've ever seen in any horse race'.
Well done, Paul.

Headline roundup
Mighty Potter
We didn't mention it in yesterdays newsletter as the Point To Point booze bank needed organising and this story deserved more time and consideration than I could give it.
Sadly, on Sunday, the hugely promising MIGHTY POTTER was fatally injured at Fairyhouse in the Grade 1 Novice Gold Cup after he fell during the race.
It’s a part of the game that doesn’t get easier and this one really hurt.
You have those horses that you love in this game and he was one.
Thoughts are with connections at this time.
Thank you and rest easy, Mighty Potter.

The whole Gordon Elliott stable worshipped this MARTALINE gelding as he was one they all thought could be a superstar, a horse who could potentially challenge for the Gold Cup next season. The stable staff that looked after him day after day must have had an awful weekend and to them, we are sorry.
As if losing MIGHT POTTER wasn't bad enough, Gordon Elliott received a kicking online for his apparent lack of emotion.
🗣 "You're gutted, heartbroken, it's very hard to find horses like him"
Gordon Elliott talks to Gary O'Brien about the loss of stable star Mighty Potter at Fairyhouse today.

I think since 'that' picture, people want to see Gordon on his knees in tears.
Look, we're not the biggest fan of the trainer but he's served his punishment and people now need to let him get on with the job. It's a business for him at the end of the day and he'd no doubt need to show a brave face to look after the stable staff who cared for MIGHTY POTTER.
He will be devastated and doing the interview straight after the race is a brave thing to do. Let's actually just give the man a break and let the connections have their space.
RIP Mighty Potter and thank you for your special performances on the track.
What a talent.

Townend wins the Irish National
In a weekend full of brilliant Irish races and results, the Irish Grand National stole the show on Easter Monday as I AM MAXIMUS, in his new green and gold silks, won the feature contest of the weekend.

Of the six finishers, the novice was ridden to absolute perfection by Paul Townend and took the€500,000 event off a mark of 149 and there was an emotional JP McManus in Fairyhouse on Monday after his fourth win in the race.

The seven-year-old was the typical ‘Graded horse in a handicap’ yesterday having finished fourth to THE REAL WHACKER and the late MIGHTY POTTER already this season. Because of his win, he will no longer be a Novice next season, putting to bed the ‘I Am Maximus for the National Hunt Chase 2024’ from the degens on Racing Twitter. LOL.

Racing Twitter strikes again.
P.s. do you want an eyecatcher from the Irish Grand National Day? GALORE DESASSENCES ran a great race from a tough position in the 2m5f handicap hurdle behind AILIE ROSE on his debut for Gavin Cromwell. He could be one to watch in a handicap nto.

DIAMOND in the rough
She missed Cheltenham due to a small setback, but she was on top form at Fairyhouse this weekend as ASHROE DIAMOND blitzed the field in the Grade 1 Honeysuckle Mares’ Novice Hurdle.
Blimey!

She beat the 80/1 shot WHATCOULDHAVEBEEN, who ran a cracker of a race, and had the rest of the contest at long intervals in behind and she has to be taken extremely seriously next season.
What an unbelievable ride from @aidanpkelly15! We knew we had a good mare but this is things we dream of! The girls and daddy do an unbelievable job no doubt we’ll be back in this type of race again with our girl🐎💞🏆🏆 #whatcouldhavebeen

Her correct trip
And finally, the flat had a great weekend as well thanks to Bath on Good Friday, a place where trainer Tony Carroll notched up his 600th career win, and Cork on Saturday.

The King’s Stand and Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot are on the agenda for her now, a duo of races that trainer Aidan O’Brien believes she could do one after another, as he said: “We thought if she got to Royal Ascot that she could run two days, in the King’s Stand and the Diamond (Platinum) Jubilee. She has a lovely mind, relaxes and quickens and could be very exciting for the year.”
Given Royal Ascot allow a horse to run multiple times in the meeting, would you like Cheltenham to introduce the same thing?
Imagine...CONSTITUTION HILL having a nice warm up by winning the Champion Hurdle y 10 lengths and then go blitz everyone in the Champion Chase!

Playing a half bet on the drift for this lad, 7/4 out to 11/4. He's had a run so will be primed today for a stable in very good form. Stoutes getting squeezed but ped suggests might need the run. Most of the field are mainly unraced horses who might need the run too. LEGACY POWER wont end up being the best horse in this race in time, but banking on him being the fittest today.
