HEADLINE ROUNDUP

HUNGARY FOR WINNERS

The familiar face of Frankie Dettori will be missing from our TV’s Saturday for he explores new territory in his bid to make his farewell and final season a memorable one.

The Italian super-jockey is heading to the beautiful city of Budapest, Hungary as part of the British contingent competing in Hungary’s biggest racing prize of the year, the Kincsem Park Stakes.

Having never visited the country and this years being his final season, Frankie though ‘why not’ when invited by owners Jim and Fitri Hay at Goodwood this year.

Frankie will join trainers Ian Williams, David Simcock and Paul Cole out there on Friday for the meetings evening reception before racing gets underway on the Saturday.

Weirdly, Hungarian racing is run by the Ministry of Defence and the government are creating fixtures in an attempt to increase the popularity of the sport with Jim and Fitri a key part in supporting the event.

Jim and Fitri, better known as owners of ANCIENT ROME who will be contesting the $2m Grade 3 at Kentucky Downs on Saturday, will be represented by SPLENDANT and TIDES OF WAR in the Kinscem Stakes while SILENT FILM and SCEPTIC will carry their pink and green silks in the Imperial Stakes.

ROBSON WITH MORE AMMO

The Goffs Yearling Sale began yesterday and Robson Aguiar, the brains behind Amo Racing, bagged a well-related son of WOOTTON BASSETT for £200k.

A half to Group 2 winning TRILLIUM, he has a page to die for with the dam MARSH HAWK bringing some fire 2yo legacy to the mix as well.

Obviously, this is a typical Amo racing type horse but Robson wasn’t giving too much away about his future ownership saying “I bought him for myself at the moment but we’ll see, maybe later on I could have a partner in the horse…

… he really reminded me of Bucanero Fuerte when I bought him as a yearling. He’s got a good loose walk, he’s very athletic, and has a good pedigree. If he works out, I think he could be another Bucanero Fuerte”.

HOPES FOR A RETURN

The final Classics of the season are on the horizon as we race towards the final stages of the season and two horses are set to try and get their season back on track in both the British and Irish equivalent of the Leger.

The first is GREGORY who we mentioned yesterday as a being a big York let down. He is looking to bounce back from his disappointment in the natural Leger trial.

The 3yo by GOLDEN HORN is the same price as his defeater, CONTINUOUS, for the 1m6f event at Donny, and with a slower first few furlongs, he could be a player.

The second is actually last years St Leger winner, ELDAR ELDAROV, as Varian is keen to send him to the Irish St Leger at the Irish Champions Festival.

The 4yo by DUBAWU has been disappointing this season over a variety of staying trips, though Chris Wall, racing manager to owners KHK Racing, is keen to remain upbeat: “The target for him is to go to the Irish St Leger and that is very much still on the cards at the moment - he’s grand and it’s all systems go”.

YOUNG BLOOD

15.45 CATTERICK

MEZZO SOPRANO is the 360k rep of Tabor, running in his wife’s name. By EXCEED AND EXCEL out of 95 rated SHAMARDAL mare, this girl has the pedigree to be nice and has been subsequently smashed in the market from evens into 8/11.

AGNES GREY reps Quinn and it a little more exposed than the others but her experience should put her in good stead against a field of young fillies. The first dam leaves a little to be desired (hasn’t produced a winner yet) but the second dam’s page is littered with winners. Respected but doesnt set the bar too high.

TRUE NATION ran too green first time out. Second dam brings a bit of stamina so might be an unusual cross with her sire SIOUX NATION but a bit of money (albeit a weak race) suggests she’s improved for the run. 25’s into 12’s.

The field look ones for handicapping down the line.

Verdict: the money has come for the Tabor fave, MEZZO SOPRANO, and given the price tag, it would be disappointing should she not win well on debut. Money says she’s ready. TRUE NATION to fill the place in behind. The rev fc w/ the fave pays 10’s and 20’s. That could be the play if fave too short.

STATS OF THE DAY

The Cole’s send NASNEEN all the way to Catterick for the 13.40. Second in market vs heavy odds on shot, but they have a 39% sr (14/36) when clocking this much mileage.

Horses for courses here as LORD TORRANAGA has either placed or won in 5 from 8 goes at Catterick when the going is better than soft. Races in 14.10 today.

RISK ON

No standout bets today on another day of poor racing so we’ll have a speccy play on the rev fc in Young Blood.
