THE RUGBY WORLD CUP IS HERE and what a match to kick it off - France vs New Zealand. Both teams will be looking to make a BIG statement in Paris tonight.

Unbelievably, France have never won a Rugby World Cup but continue to be consistently one of the best the best sides in world rugby, demonstrated by the fact they’re odds on to win tonight.

Given New Zealand’s brilliant track record when playing France, beating the blues 48 times vs Frances 13, why is the market taking the All Blacks on?

Well, the All Blacks were last seen getting absolutely pulverised by a big bullying South Africa side. But that wasn’t the World Cup… four years ago New Zealand were going for the World Cup hat trick, only to be beaten by a dominant England in the semi-finals in Japan. They’re still the main front runners of this tournament and will look to put France away early who often have a big first half in them.

The outcome of this match is huge and will largely influence the final stages of the tournament meaning both sides won’t want to give an inch.

It’s an incredibly tough one to call, so on that basis, and at the odds, a draw is looking quite tempting at 20’s.

Anyway, this newsletter’s about racing so lets dive in.

HEADLINE ROUNDUP

THE RACING LEAGUE

Say what you want, but this year’s Racing League has been good fun and last night saw the team element of the competition come to the fore.

Although it seemed like Wales & The West would run away with the title for a second year in a row, Jamie Osborne’s team fielded a weaker side and without star jockey Saffie Osborne, allowing the other sides to claw some back.

And capitalise they did as London & The South fired in a double thanks to Sean Levey, Team Ireland picked up a victory in race four, and both The North and Team Scotland landed winning joker (double points) cards.

Although Team Ireland failed to fire with their final joker card of the competition in race six, that victory under Billy Loughnane – putting the wonder kid one victory away from riding out his claim – helped the green team go top of the leader board with one race to go on the night.

However, a poor outing from Ireland (when we had such high hopes!) saw Wales & The West regain their lead by just points by the end of the evening.

So, with one week left at Southwell, all seven teams will be firing their best chances at valuable races to create a competitive evening next Wednesday. Love it or loathe it, fair play to the Racing League.

HS TOOOO MUCH MONEY

It was good to see Goffs Yorton Sale attracting some big connections to the picturesque ring yesterday and prominent owner Dai Walters placed a sale-record bid of £165,000 to secure a NO RISK AT ALL half-brother to AL DANCER.

Clearly making hay while the sun shines, Dai is a big beneficiary of the governments laughable HS2 project. All the trucks and diggers leased to supposedly move soil (but actually just sat there doing f all) are owned by Walter Hire - Dai’s company. He’ll be making a f*cking killing from it.

Back to the lot, the horse is named BRISKY DANCER and was bought by Ian Ferguson, on behalf of Walters who is still recovering from his helicopter crash last November. The two-year-old comes from a good family of winners with TZAR’S DANCER and FIRE DANCER all decent horses for connections.

Ferguson outbid Ben Pauling for the well-related horse and after the sale, he said: “When I studied the catalogue, I didn’t know I’d be trying to buy him. Dai Walters rang me and asked me if I was coming here. I said I was, so he told me he wanted me to look at three horses for him.

“This horse was the standout so I reported to base and Dai told me to be on the phone when the horse was in the ring.”

JUMPING INTO THE HORSES TO FOLLOW

Yes, we know it’s not even the St Leger yet, but ‘jumpers to follow’ has been slowly creeping into the timeline on Racing X. VOM.

Plenty can and should be ignored, but it’s worth paying attention to the videos from Paul Ferguson, the author of ‘Jumpers To Follow’ which is a yearly book released in September.

Looking at his timeline, he has visited a fair few yards and has some good nuggets of information, so here are a few tweets to note down in the tracker ahead of this season.

PAUL NICHOLLS:

JOE TIZZARD:

JAMIE SNOWDEN:

HARRY DERHAM:

Anyway, enough jumps talk, back to the flat.

YOUNG BLOOD

15.10 HAYDOCK

DAZZLING JEWEL from the Godolphin camp, and bred by the boys in blue. This filly is o/o LUMIERE who was a very good 2yo; second in the Gr2 Lowther and she won the Gr1 Cheveley Park Stakes, Lumiere’s best run as a 3yo was second to ACLAIM in the Gr2 Challenge Stakes. This filly full brother HIGHLAND AVENUE ran once as a 2yo when 2nd at Kempton.

SIMPLE ENDEAVOUR runs for Burke. No one has spent more money recently than Yulong, and this filly cost them 800,000gns. This filly is by DUBAWI o/o DARK ANGEL filly WISDOM MIND who was placed in Listed company as a 3yo. She in turn is a sister to Gr1 winner BARNEY ROY.

ERANTHIS was initially purchased by Roger Varian at the sales but has landed itself in the Karl Burke camp. Bought for 350,000gns, he’s by DEEP IMPACT’s son SAXON WARRIOR and out of an unraced daughter of TEOFILO. From a lovely family that includes; Classic winner and BC Mile winner BARATHEA and Champion 3yo filly GOSSAMER. ERANTHIS’ dam is well related, and she has produced a Listed winner in Germany. Interesting.

BOLSENA is probably the best bred horse in the race. O/o REEM THREE who has produced TRIPLE TIME, CAPE BYRON, OSTILIO, AJMAN PRINCESS and THIRD REALM. She is by KINGMAN who is having a stellar year as well. Will be a filly for the tracker whatever happens.

LINGUA FRANCA is by French Derby winner STUDY OF MAN, from a very useful middle distance family of Lanwades. This filly’s brother is LE DON DE VIE who most recently as a 6yo was 2nd in a Group 1 in Australia, her other brother is the Ian Williams trained LAW OF THE SEA who loves a marathon trip. In the hands of Sir Mark, she could be one for next year.

Verdict: BOLSENA has the best page but for this race today we’re all over DAZZLING JEWEL.

STATS OF THE DAY

After bad stat yesterday (mare’s!), there’s one today, but it’s speccy….

Boughey is clocking mileage with the well bred and expensive QUEEN OF SPARTA running in the 14.45. She had three quick runs earlier in the summer and makes her handicap debut debut today off 63. Boughy is +£41 with handicap debutants, a stat boosted by his record at Newcastle (28% in these types of races at track).

RISK ON

GOODEVENINGMRBOND pulled too hard yesterday under Buick and lost his chances early doors. He could prove well handicapped and one to keep on side moving forward for up and coming trainer Jack Jones.

Singles today are a speccy poke on the Rugby tonight and:

14.00 LADY PAGASA

There are strong whispers the boys in blue are gambling both the Young Blood pick and DREAM WHISPER. This money is pushing out LADY PAGASA to 9/2 which we’re going to play as an ew to nothing. She finished so far in front of DREAM WHISPER lto it’s hard to see how the form can be reversed so easily… they obviously know something but let’s see…

15.00 SEAWARD

Smashed in the market 6/4 into even money. Big fan of this filly but got bogged down on soft lto and should improve today. Her experience is big value add against unraced rivals. We’ve played the single but if that’s too short for a Friday, it could be good lev for another. The lev on the Young Blood pick pays 3/1.

There are a few readers at Ascot today who have asked for a selection. We quite like PASTICHE 17.20. She reared when breaking lto which cost her the race. She’s well clear on numbers and is a play today. If Boughey’s is well handicapped (stats) he could have a treble today.

There is one more bet but we’ll post it late so the owner can get his price.
