Let’s dive in!
THE GUINEAS
The first Classic of the season. The stallion maker. The most famous race in the world.
It’s the 2000 Guineas.
Firstly, lets look at a potential track bias. You have to remember that from the middle of March, Newmarket racecourse is open to the gallopers every morning. On Guineas day they accommodate the big fields by moving the rail further in towards the stands where the ground hasn’t been raced on for 7/8 months. THAT is where you want to be and so a higher draw bias could play out today.
Ballydoyle’s GSTAAD has seen some support. He comes from stall 7 so will be charging right down the middle of the track. He has the best form in the book - he was the bridesmaid in 3x Group 1’s before landing Breeders Cup.
BOW ECHO has finally been knocked off favouritism, he’s been top of the market for weeks now as others have been scratched. He’s unbeaten and we’ve backed him for every one of his wins having knew how good he was from the get go. He will have his supporters today and he gets a nice draw from 15 where he can get in amongst a few horses on the wing and benefit from the best ground.
Like BOW ECHO, DISTANT STORM is by gun sire NIGHT OF THUNDER but out of a GEORGE WASHINGTON mare. Both NIGHT OF THUNDER and GEORGE WASHINGTON won the Guineas! He’s drawn on the other side of the track in 2 where Buick will need to have eyes in the side of his head to make sure those furthest away don’t escape him.
By FRANKEL, OXAGON is a beautiful horse. Last seen winning the Craven he’s shown he needs the fast ground and should enjoy himself today. He’ll be from 10 and so will come down off the middle, closer to the stand. Perfect.
KINGS TRAIL hasn’t got much racing experience and that is all on all weather - which we know is fine given Appleby did the same prep for NOTABLE SPEECH. By SEA THE STARS, he’ll love the ground but how he’ll fair to today is up in the air given he’s so unexposed.
AVICENNA was second in the Craven meaning he’ll have to really improve to land a blow here.
NEEDLE MATCH is another horse by NIGHT OF THUNDER, this time out of a US mare by AMERICAN PHAROAH. He was fourth in the Greenham, the form of which might (or might not) prove bloody useful but Shaggas is in bloody hot form, especially with his 3yo’s.
THESECRETADVERSARY is an Irish raider but the mile and ground are two massive red flags.
ALPARSLAN won a messy Greenham, again the form of which is up in the air. Given Aidan pulled AE from this race you’d think they know it’s not good enough so that’s enough to want to take this Burke improver on.
INTO THE SKY put on a show on his debut and then was quickly bought by Tabor. We wondered if it was a fluke but he kind of backed it up next time out in the Mill Reef. This lad is a complete unknown. By rocket sire STARMAN, they’ve proven to not just be 2yo’s but he’s yet to produce his ‘star’ (pun intended). If INTO THE SKY shocks the market to win, then VENETIAN SUN has a HUGE chance of landing a famous same sire Guineas double.
It’s been done before. In 2017, WINTER and CHURCHILL did it for GALILEO.
STARSPANGLEDBANNER has PRECISE and GSTAAD. Thats huge and not bad for an Australian sprinter demanding a 35k covering fee!
And NIGHT OF THUNDER has DISTANT STORM and BOW ECHO at the top of the boys market and then EVOLUTIONIST in the girls.
We could defo get a sire double this weekend.
Of the rest,
Verdict: DISTANT STORM could be the one. Appleby has a ln obviously strong record in the Guineas and we can see him improving plenty over the winter. The same can be applied for BOW ECHO who won the Royal Lodge, the from of that has been upheld. He should be there at the business end. OXAGON will relish a gallop, he’ll be hard to peg back when looking to make the running. He won his trial nicely, clearly trained on and loads of scope to be competitive. GSTAAD has always been the understudy to ALBERT who sadly hasn’t lined up today (doh!). He oozes class but a mile might just stretch him out. of the rest AVICENNA and KING’S TRAIL need to improve plenty but could cause an upset… it’s the Guineas at the end of the day, the former with the course form.
DISTANT STORM for us.
