Haydock’s scheduled two-day fixture has been cancelled following ongoing concerns over the condition of the track, with the BHA confirming replacement meetings at Carlisle and Wolverhampton instead. The decision comes after ANOTHER drainage issue (think Cheltenham) at Haydock caused a massive hole, as long as an arm, to appear on the course during last Saturday’s racing, prompting safety concerns and an inspection of the inner track earlier this week.

The problem first emerged when FRIENDLY SOUL stumbled mid-race Saturday, with trainer John Gosden later describing the damaged section as a “well-camouflaged trap”. Although several sprint races were able to continue on the inner course last weekend, officials concluded that the surface had already endured too much racing to safely host another fixture this week. Haydock officials confirmed that investigations into the drainage issue are continuing, with specialist consultants still assessing the track.

CARLISLE will now stage Saturday’s rearranged card, including several feature races originally due to take place at Haydock. ITV Racing will broadcast five contests from the meeting, while Wolverhampton will host an additional six-race fixture on Friday to help accommodate the displaced programme.

The Silver Bowl Handicap, one of the races abandoned at Haydock last weekend, will retain its original prize-money and sponsorship as part of the rescheduled fixture but owners who might have enjoyed the bit if cut in the ground Haydock was offering might be a little p*ssed off!

🫣WILD EXIT

An absolutely WILD moment at Aqueduct on Monday evening saw US based jockey Edgard Zayas dramatically unshipped from his mount during a race. Riding the Amira Chichakly-trained GLINT, Zayas was attempting to hold a forward position in the early stages when the 5yo clipped heels with a rival and stumbled badly, lunching the jock high into the air before he landed heavily on the dirt track.

Both horse and jockey escaped serious injury with Zayas stood down from the remainder of his rides on the card as a precaution but later confirmed on social media that he had avoided injury. Connections of GLINT also reported that the horse returned safely and was in good condition after the incident.

Epsom is optimistic that this year’s Derby will attract significantly larger crowds as the racecourse looks to revive interest in its flagship meeting. More than 60,000 people are expected across the two-day-er, including visitors to both the paid enclosures and the famous Hill, with strong advance sales reported ahead of the June 5-6 fixture.

The track has introduced a range of new initiatives aimed at improving the raceday experience following a sharp decline in attendance in recent years. Last season’s Derby Day crowd in the paid areas fell to its lowest modern-era figure, but Epsom management believes the addition of DERBYFEST and enhanced attractions around the course are already helping to drive renewed interest. Several enclosures are close to selling out, while thousands have already registered for the free festival area on the Hill.

For punters, attention is also turning to conditions on the track itself, with clerk of the course Andrew Cooper aiming to provide ground on the fast side of good. After this hot weather, the team are carefully monitoring forecasts and watering plans to maintain safe and fair racing conditions. Riders taking part in Tuesday’s gallops morning reported the surface to be in excellent shape.
