It was a sad day yesterday for Tweenhills as the sire of many BGP gambles, HAVANA GOLD slipped coming out his paddock and suffered a fatal injury.

The boys behind BGP worked very closely with this chap, so thoughts with connections.

Let’s dive in.

Headline roundup

RIP HAVANA GOLD

It was revealed yesterday that HAVANA GOLD, the 2013 Group 1 Prix Jean Prat winner and hugely successful stallion, had passed away at the age of 13.

The son of TEOFILO is the sire of HAVANA GREY, champion first-season sire last year, EL CABALLO, TABDEED, and BGP legend CHIPOTLE.

Standing at Tweenhills Farm for £10,000, HAVANA GOLD sustained a fatal pelvic injury on Thursday at his Gloucestershire home but wasn’t in pain long as a vet was close by.

A good horse gone too soon. RIP.

It’s Del Mar again!

Del Mar racecourse announced that they will be the host of the 2024 Breeders’ Cup.

The Californian track was first chosen for the role in 2017 and then again in 2022, an event that saw YIBIR take the Breeders’ Cup Turf for Godolphin.

Prize money will top $31 million for the event, last held at Santa Anita.

Gordon goes big… again!

Living more up to his namesake Gordon Gekko, six-figure sums were being splashed out at the Tattersalls Cheltenham February Sale yesterday as Gordon (Elliott) spent £370,000 on Jersey Des Brosses.

The NO RISK AT ALL gelding finished second to JINGKO BLUE, also sold at the sale for £225,000, in a four-year-old maiden at Oldtown on Saturday, and the auctioneer opened up the sale of the horse by saying: “You’ve heard the whispers about him.”

Following the sale, Elliott said: “He looked the standout horse in the sale and I’d say a summer’s grass is what he wants as he’s a horse with plenty of improvement in him. He’s one we’re looking forward to for next year. We’d seen him in Colin’s and liked him. We’ll have to get him home and get him sold now.”

Elsewhere, Matt Coleman, standing next to Jonjo O’Neill, splashed £290,000 on a five-year-old son of WALK IN THE PARK, MT FUGI PARK, and Ben Pauling spent £250,000 on LEADER IN THE PARK.

Bumper preview

Warwick

Fergal heads the market (obviously), yard have to be feared. I don’t like the sire of his filly but the dam side has produced stamina so that’s a small plus. I’m taking in though as there are some very nice ped’s in this.

There’s a stat for King’s in this race (see stats), his mate is out of a bumper winner. Feared.

On blood, JJ’s is an unknown but was an expensive point winner so again, feared.

Ralph’s mares dam side is strong for stamina. Feared… as is Skeltons. You can see how this is quote a warm race now.

At a bigger, double digit price, LADY CARO might have more in the tank than last seen. Had a prep run so will have learned a bit and she’s a half to two bumper weapons.

Id be siding with Kings and Lavelles in this.

Exeter

Tizzards is drifting but could win this shit show of a bumper. Interest in it tbh.

Today's best stats

16.40 BABY SAGE runs in the bumper for Alan King who targets this race having won it in ‘18 and ‘21.

16.17 SPORTING ACE goes for a different King, Neil King with noodle arms in the plate (oh lord). Trainer and jock 2 from 4 together all time.

Risk On
