🏛️EX-SPENCE-IVE BETTING
Last week, we told you that Alan Spence (owner of the famous red and white colours with blue and white striped hat (think JUKEBOX JURY)) was in a bit of bother over gambling debts to some ex-businessman named David Solomon. Last week, the High Court case found that Spence is liable for more than £840,000 owed to Solomon.
LOL!
The case centred on bets placed between 2018 and 2022, during which Spence—described in court as a “heavy, compulsive gambler”—accumulated large losses through unlicensed betting arrangements. Spence’s defence was that the debts should not be enforceable because they weren’t wagered through traditional licensed bookies and were instead linked to an illegal bookmaking operation. The judge was having none of it and the court quickly rejected his argument, concluding that the agreements were still recoverable.
Ouch.
Ultimately, the decision reinforces that courts can—and will—enforce gambling debts in certain circumstances, even when the betting arrangements fall outside standard regulated environments.
