HEADLINE ROUNDUP
COMPANY RESTRUCTURE
In Greek mythology the Phoenix is an immortal bird, otherwise reborn from the ashes, a symbol of new life after total devastation.
Stavros Niarchos was the embodiment of that Phoenix.
With a sizeable insurance pay out after his commercial boats were ruined in World War II, the Greek businessman used those funds to re-build his business and turn it into one of the biggest oil shipping companies the world has ever seen.
He didn’t stop at super tankers though, he wanted super horses. Stavros was obsessed with horse racing and thus his vast wealth from shipping meant he was able to go toe to toe with the likes of Magnier and Sangster in the sales ring buy a breed the best thoroughbreds the world has ever seen.
Since Stavros’ death in ‘96, the family have maintained their presence at the forefront of the thoroughbred industry but news was released this week that their bloodstock empire is to be re-structured and large portion of assets divested including their massive stud farm Haras De Fresnay Le Buffard, France. Check out this beauty:
Another asset up for sale which might be more familiar to you is four-time Group 1-winning broodmare, ALPHA CENTAURI. She will go under the hammer at the Goffs Breeding Sale in November.

Seven months on, the family is now set to list up 44 of their top broodmares including the previously mentioned Irish 1000 Guineas winner, ALBIGNA, FIESOLANA, and TAPESTRY.
Despite this offload of breeding talent, Alan Cooper, the operation's racing manager, told TDN that this does not mean the Niarchos family is shutting up shop.
“This is a restructuring process and not a dispersal. The family will have the opportunity to set reserves on the stock as they see fit.
“The racing stables will continue to be supported by foals, yearlings, two-year-olds and older horses that are already in the system. There will be further offerings at Tattersalls and Arqana in the coming months.”
KINROSS NO CERTAINTY
The end of the Flat season is on the horizon and plenty of races are still there to be enjoyed and bet on.
One of these big races to be excited for is Group 1 Champions Sprint Stakes at Ascot on Champions Day with KINROSS the current 11/4 market leader, however, KINROSS fans should approach with caution from an ante-post perspective.
This is because the six-year-old may skip the contest due to his Breeders’ Cup target in early November. Marc Chan's racing manager, Jamie McCalmont, said: "The plan, first and foremost, is to go back to France as he has done the last two years [for the Group 1 Qatar Prix de la Foret]. We'll go one step at a time with him this year, but the Breeders' Cup and the Hong Kong Mile are both major targets.
"That's not to say he won't run at Ascot, but it is only two weeks before the Breeders' Cup and he's six now. We've got to take each race at a time and he's in great form, but it's a bit greedy to say we'll go do this, that and the other.”
🗣 "It's only two weeks before the Breeders' Cup"
Connections of Kinross issued a word of caution to ante-post punters on Thursday, stating that while the Champions Sprint at Ascot remained under consideration, other targets were viewed as higher priorities

GIA VIA ASCOT
One horse who could have a part to play in Champions Day, more in the Group 2 Long Distance Cup is GIAVELLOTTO as plans to head to the Melbourne Cup have been scrapped.
The Marco Botti-trainer four-year-old was on course for a run in Australia’s most famous contest later this year, but a few “niggling problems” have put this idea on the back burner. Sounds like he wouldn’t pass the strict vetting to us.
Instead, Ascot’s season-ending staying race could be in his sights following a promising run in the Lonsdale Cup lto.
Botti said: “We'll keep an eye on the weather as he will only go to Ascot if the ground is not too soft. Good to soft is fine, but he wouldn't want to run on anything softer than that. If he doesn't go to Ascot we'll just put him away for the winter.
“We haven't discussed plans for next year with the owners yet. I wouldn't rule out going back to [the] Dubai World Cup night for the G2 Gold Cup, but let's see how he winters and how he is after a nice break.”
YOUNG BLOOD
14.15 AYR
The Listed Harry Roseberry Stakes see’s three previous big priced Young Blood winners face each other…and boy is it going to be a belting race.
BEAUTIFUL DIAMOND is one of them. By TWILIGHT SON, she ran a bit green lto in the Lowther. That was only her third run and off the back of a 2 month break so she could and should improve from that. Ground a concern if too soft.
PUROSANGUE, the Ferrari, should be fine on soft ground having been second to BIG EVS at Goodwood. That’s solid form. He’s a consistent type and another good run is expected.
MON NA SLIEVE was an inspired pick at 9’s on debut. He has been a good fun horse this year for owners winning fto at York (Young Blood selection) and then he was 8th at Royal Ascot on his second start before having a 64 day break and running 5th behind PUROSANGUE on his last start. He set some speedy fractions and couldn’t quite finish his race off, nice horse but ground a huge worry.
BOMBAY BAZAAR by KODIAC o/o a SHAMARDAL mare is looking exposed now, the form of his 4th lto in a listed race isn’t as good as these. Experienced but future lies in handicaps.
QUEEN GUARD went off favourite on debut and made a relatively promising start on the soft ground. She then won cosily on her second start, form isn’t Group class but she did it well and deserves to take her chance in a listed. On pedigree the soft ground shouldn’t be an issue.
Verdict: The highest rated horse in the race is PUROSANGUE and he looks to have the best chance with the softened ground. QUEENS GUARD is the fly in the ointment and is expected to outrun her odds.
STATS OF THE DAY
Shaggas is 3 from 5 in the 16.10 and his leading hope today is ALDAARY who gets his favoured slop.
18.15 OLYMPIC CANDLE reps the bin Suroor and Oisin Murphy combo who have a bullish 40% when teaming up at Kempton. bin Suroor lands 1 in 4 2yo’s in non-handicaps at Kempton.
Speccy one at a price but race is poor, LAS CUATRO runs for Butler 20.15 with Morgan Cole in the plate. Trainer jock combo are 3 from 3 all time at Kempton.
RISK ON
Strong bet for tomorrow. As for today, it looks really tough. ALDAARY should be good for leverage on another and we’ll continue to follow the Ferrari off a cliff. The only single we like is:
13.15 MISS ROBERTS
Can’t believe she hasn’t won yet, today has to be her day.
There might be a slop play at Newton Abbot later.
