HEADLINE ROUNDUP
🚀DOCKET FOR A ROCKET
A standout moment at the Goffs UK Breeze-Up Sale came when a highly regarded MEHMAS colt from Tally-Ho Stud sparked a huge bidding war that lit up the ring.
Interest was strong from the outset, but the contest quickly narrowed into a heavyweight showdown between leading agents, with bids climbing rapidly past the halfway mark before a decisive late move by ANTHONY STROUD secured the colt for a massive £880,000.
The result marks one of the highest prices ever achieved at the sale and underlines the continued demand for a ready made Royal Ascot 2yo.
The colt’s journey to this moment adds another layer to the story, having previously failed to meet his reserve as a yearling before developing into a top breezer. His sale also capped a highly successful week for Tally-Ho, whose draft dominated the vendors’ standings once again.
While overall trade at the sale reflected a slightly cooler market compared to last year, the appetite for standout individuals remains as strong as ever—particularly those by MEHMAS, who was described as the RONALDO of stallions - able to score every time!
The MEHMAS colt wasn’t the only big money purchase won by Stroud for he also went to nearly a million for a filly by STARSPANGLEDBANNER at last weeks Craven sale. Like last years mega-money horse ZANTHOS, she will be trained by the Crisfords.
🔄ALL CHANGE FOR TOP JOCKEYS
Harry Cobden marked the imminent curtain call of his time with Paul Nicholls yesterday by producing NO DRAMA THIS END late to win at Perth.
Today will see Cobden rep the famous green and gold colours of his new boss JP McManus aboard a Gordon Elliott horse in the 15.10.
There’s a sense of another FITTING FINALE on the horizon for Johnny Burke also, as he rides IN D’OR in Sandown’s Gold Cup Chase for the last time as retained jock for Fergal O’Brien.
This race brings to a close a fairly productive partnership that has delivered a steady stream of winners and notable big-race success over the past two seasons. IN D’OR arrives in strong form after a disrupted spring, and connections are hopeful he can capitalise on a race that has become his primary target after missing earlier engagements.
Burke’s decision to step away from his retained role reflects a desire to broaden his opportunities, with the 30-year-old opting to return to freelance riding and potentially explore chances over in Ireland. His time with Fergal has included standout moments—most notably top-level success with CRAMBO—and has helped re-establish him as a rider at the top level.
A big run at Sandown would provide a timely conclusion to another successful chapter.
