HEADLINE ROUND UP
REUNITED
‘He knows my CV well because he practically created it’ - Sammy Twiston-Davies on Paul Nicholls after it was announced he would be going full circle, back to Ditcheat where he started his career.
In the jumps world, few trainer-jockey combinations have delivered as much big-race success as big Paul and Sam Twiston-Davies during their time together at Ditcheat. The partnership began back in ‘14 when Nicholls, the multi-time champion trainer, appointed the then-21-year-old Twiston-Davies as his number one stable jockey, replacing Daryl Jacob. It proved an inspired choice as Sammy quickly made an impact, and with his famous Sammy drive got DODGING BULLETS home in front to land the Tingle Creek in his first year, marking his first ‘big’ win for the yard (they actually went on the win the Champion Chase together).
Sammy’s career continued to blossom, enjoying a career-best season in 2014-15, riding 145 winners overall (most for Nicholls) and amassing nearly £2.5 million in prize money. He also steered VICENTE to back-to-back victories in the Scottish Grand National in 2016 and 2017. Now that is some training performance - racing fans forget what Paul did… it wasn’t long ago either.
Fair play to both of them, bridges weren’t burned when Sammy left Ditcheat (and went freelance) for Harry Cobden to take over, they continued to work together a and when was required (think CLAN DES OBEAUX in the ‘19 King George) and now fate has seem them reunite.
With no pressure to perform this time, given he’s established himself as one of the best jump jockeys in the world, Sammy has described the hunger they both own to win as a dangerous combination. Sammy is naturally a huge character, so this new confidence and excitement he’s bringing to Ditcheat must be refreshening for Paul (who will be relieved with Sammy’s return).
