HEADLINE ROUNDUP

EXCEPTIONAL WORK

An “exceptional” piece of work has forced the hand of BROADWAY BOY’s connections as they are sending their two-time Cheltenham winner to the Brown Advisory. Having been as short as 7.0 on the Betfair Exchange for the National Hunt Chase, assistant trainer Willy Twiston-Davies provided Racing X with an update yesterday.

This has been the long-term target from Willy for a while, but there were a few uncertainties over the last few weeks as to where he would be going.

However, the second race on the Wednesday is now firmly the target, as Willy Twiston-Davies said: "Broadway Boy worked exceptionally well last week. He had a quiet two weeks after he ran at Warwick in January, when he wasn't right, but hasn't missed a beat since.

“We've had a meeting today with David [Proos, owner], who came down to see the horse and it was a toss of the coin for me, but David was keen to go for the Brown Advisory, which is the Grade 1, and we all believe the horse is good enough to be in the race.” This adds another element to the Brown Advisory which could be a strong contest if GREY DAWNING also turns up.

OI OI, AHOY!

The Ryanair Chase could receive another interesting piece to the puzzle if connections decide to make a firm plan as Derek Fox wants AHOY SENOR to run in the Ryanair Chase.

The Grand National-winning jockey believes a step down in trip could suit the 2023 Cotswold Chase winner, who fell in last year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup, and is currently a 25/1-shot.

But, there is no smoke without fire and it seems as if Lucinda Russell also agrees with Fox, as she told William Hill: I would like to run him in the Ryanair, but I do need to chat with his owners to confirm that. “I know they’d love to win the Gold Cup, so I need to sit down with them and finalise exactly what we do with him. We were happy enough with his run at Ascot and he’s another that I think is a pretty big price based on the best of his form.”

For a horse of his class, would you give him a chance?

A LOOK AHEAD

This week’s ‘A Look Ahead’ focuses on Sandown’s feature race, the Imperial Cup, on Saturday.

Ben Pauling seems to have a strong hand in this year’s famous renewal as both JIPCOT and BAD hold strong claims for the £100,000 handicap. Starting with JIPCOT, he bolted up for us over the weekend.

Subsequently he has been given a seven-pound penalty for his troubles but Pauling knew that was coming as he needed a win to get in to the race. He was seriously impressive Sunday and handled the easy ground meaning Sandown might not be too much of a hindrance. He could have untapped potential off his mark. Watch this:

BAD has danced a few dances this season in a couple of valuable Ascot handicap hurdles as well as the Gerry Feilden, though he has failed to win. His mark has climbed from 120 in December to 126 this weekend, and he was a horse Ben Pauling thought had a stone in hand for last year’s Boodles when he was rated 126, so he could still have some in hand. Pauling thinks he will be better for a fence, but he could have the best form here.

GO DANTE finished a good third in the Betfair Hurdle lto, a race that could be strong form-wise based on how much Nicky Henderson thinks of the fourth, DODDIETHEGREAT.

Olly Murphy also beat DODDIETHEGREAT at Cheltenham two starts ago, so he seems to be returning back to somewhere near his best, and for a horse who has yet to hit the proper heights, he could continue his progression.

MAKING HEADWAY is a horse that connections had in mind for the Coral Cup and Martin Pipe – and he still has an entry for both races – after his Newbury win lto, so he could do the Imperial Cup to Cheltenham double if that is desired. He looked impressive on his last start to jump well and make all under good jockey Henry Brooke, so he is a bit of a different profile to the aforementioned horses, but he is on handicap debut.

At bigger prices, PETIT TONNERRE is returning to hurdles from a short stint over fences for Jonjo O’Neill and he was given a mention by AJ O’Neill last week, so he could hit the frame.

And Paul Nicholls highlighted SANS BRUIT, a former French import, in his recent talk with Betfair Barry.

Verdict: This is a hyper-competitive race with horses on the up like JIPCOT, proven horses like FAIVOIR (will he run?) and ‘dangerous if they bounce back’ horses like METIER. We have no reason to take on JIPCOT 5’s who despite carrying a pen should be well handicapped with Pauling admitting this race has been a long term aim!

WINNER ANNOUNCED SATURDAY!

RISK ON

Our shorties keep getting beat this week when we had them so far clear, we might stick with the long shots until Cheltenham!

Yesterday’s bumper horse was the right one to be one, well gambled but pulled like a train the whole way. He should have won by 3 furlongs but ultimately placed, the first three pulling a furlong clear of the rest of the field We think he is a very nice horse for Walford.

Tough day with only one jumps meeting on, any bets will be posted on X.
