Let’s talk about why it exists.
It all started in the 80’s. The 80’s was when Godolphin started spending cash…unlimited cash, enough cash to take on the likes of Sangster, Magnier, O’Brien of Coolmore and of course, Niarchos, they all had previously been dominating the yearling markets.
Stavros Niachos with his brilliant 2000 Guineas 'winner' Nureyev. Once in competition with Robert Sangster at the sales, he became frustrated at paying over the odds because of Sangster's equally determined opposition, so joined forces with the Vernon's tycoon.

With no one backing down, the numbers got out of control.
Overnight, US farmers turned into jet setting, multimillionaire thoroughbred breeders where syndicates, several publicly listed, were set up and valued on the inflated price of a stallion nomination - all because they knew the likes of Godolphin and Coolmore would pay top whack for the yearlings they produced.
But, that was all paper. As Patrick Robinson described in ‘Horse Trader’, the actual sport of horse racing was getting left behind. The work riders, the trainers, the horses over in the UK and Ireland who were cogs driving the wheel of fortune, weren’t getting rewarded. Thus, it was time for the breeders to give something back.
Masterminded by a man named John Gaines, the idea was simple - put on the biggest racing event, attracting the best horses and paying the most prize money to celebrate the industry that kept the money flowing. Every stud had to contribute, if they didn’t their horses couldn’t run, a small price to pay to keep the show going. Genius.
The first Breeders Cup was held at Hollywood Park on the West Coast back in 1984.
This year, 2023, it’s Santa Anita.
Santa Anita is the worlds most beautiful racecourse...
