You can always trust Irish racing to brighten up a borings day racing.

Charles Byrnes landed a big treble at Downpatrick yesterday,

but itโ€™s ANYWAY, previously owned by Byrnes, who is dominating todayโ€™s racing headlines having been gambled from 25โ€™s into 5/4 and bolting up in a race one of Byrnesโ€™ horses was a NR in. Byrnesโ€™ runner unfortunately slipped in the lorry en route but conveniently itโ€™s owners were driving behind to take the horse back to the yard!

We all know a brilliantly obvious coup was landed and big money will have been made. The matter now lies with senior officials at the IHRB lmao.

Classic Irish racing.

Lets dive in.

HEADLINE ROUNDUP

FRANKIES INCREDIBLE FAREWELL

It almost seems like we are talking about Frankie Dettori every week, scrap that, we are talking about Frankie every week. The man has been on fire in his farewell season and landed another big race on Saturday with ABSURDE in the Ebor.

And what a race it was. For all the world it looked as if the ante-post favourite, SWEET WILLIAM, had powered to the front and gone a length up, however, Willie Mullinsโ€™ first string held on and was guided to success under strong hands and heels drive from Lanfranco.

This victory in the ยฃ500,000 handicap added to Dettoriโ€™s endless list of major successes this season.

Where next for ABSURDE? Well, the Melbourne Cup was floated up as an idea by the boss of Closutton, a race he is a general 12s chance for.

KINROSS THE BOSS

The other headline act on Saturday from York was the Group 2 City Of York Stakes over seven furlongs, a race won yet again by that man Dettori with the familiar KINROSS.

He made a striking run through the centre of the track to fend off from AUDIENCE โ€“ who ran a massive race to finish second โ€“ and collected his eighth Group win of his career.

For those inclined to watch market moves, KINROSSโ€™ win might have come as a little bit of a surprise because the six-year-old gelding was as short as 6/4 ante-post before drifting out to 3โ€™s all morning.in places in the morning before being pumped backed in to go off off 9/4.

This big win headlined a huge 90 minutes for owner Marc Chang who landed a massive owner Saturday treble.

GROUP 1 SPRINTER?

Away from the action in the UK, there was one horse that grabbed the attention of Racing X over the weekend.

Who? Well, that would be MILL STREAMโ€™s victory in the Group 3 Prix de Meautry as he won by an impressive one-and-three-quarter lengths.

He beat GARRUS (113) into second will in receipt of five pounds, so the performance is probably in the region of 115.

The three-year-old has been well-campaigned by trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam as he ran into the super-progressive QUINAULT on two occasions before his two recent successes at Deauville in both Listed and Group 3 class.

The GLENEAGLES colt has an entry for the Group 1 British Champions Sprint in late October and considering his last two victories have come in rain-softened conditions, he could be a live contender at 14/1 if British Champions Day occurs on soft ground which is often the case.

YORKโ€™S BEST AND WORST

Finally, with York over and the latter half of the Flat season on the horizon, here is a concise list of our three best and worst performances from the four days on the Knavesmire.

THE WORST

COGITATE โ€“ Acomb Stakes

There was plenty of talk for Charlie Hillโ€™s two-year-old before the off on Wednesday, yet he was very keen and didnโ€™t final anything in the final furlong. He is well-regarded, but bitterly disappointing on the day.

COURAGE MON AMI โ€“ Lonsdale Cup

Although a good second in the Lonsdale Cup, the hype behind COURAGE MON AMI was not deserved. He won the Gold Cup having benefitted from COLTRANE being positioned on the front end, and with both given a good lead into the race by QUICKTHORN last week, the best horse, COLTRANE came out on top. It doesnโ€™t look like he will be a world-beater.

GREGORY โ€“ Great Voltigeur

Not to dampen the mood of Wathnan Racing too much, but GREGORY was a well-backed failure in Wednesdayโ€™s Great Voltigeur. Frankie did set a furious pace from the front, which didnโ€™t help, but he was swept aside by CONTINUOUS and some fingers were certainly burned.

THE BEST

RELIEF RALLY โ€“ Lowther Stakes

This yearโ€™s crop of two-year-olds, bar the obvious Ballydoyle ones, havenโ€™t yet set the world alight, but RELIEF RALLY seems to be one of the very good ones. She had a tough route through the race, yet still got the job done even if she hasnโ€™t beaten a good quality field. She was the first two-year-old to appear for William Haggas, a future guide to his best juvenile of the year?

WARM HEART โ€“ Yorkshire Oaks

The Yorkshire Oaks was a good race this year, and despite AL HUSNโ€™s disappointment, nothing should take the shine off WARM HEART. Like in the Ribblesdale, she always does enough and his a hardy filly to pass. She had all the right horses behind her last week โ€“ SAVETHELASTDANCE, FREE WIND, BLUESTOCKING, STAY ALERT, NOVAKAI โ€“ and she is at the top of her game.

LIVE IN THE DREAM โ€“ Nunthorpe Stakes

Make no mistake, despite the surprise of the win, LIVE IN THE MOMENT was very good in the Nunthorpe. Similar to SHAQUILLE this year, the four-year-old did everything write, and set brilliant fractions in the middle parts of the race so that by the time the final furlong came along, the race was already won. On RPRs, he has been rated 121, and rightly so for giving HIGHFIELD PRINCESS three pounds as well as two pounds to BRADSELL and three pounds to MAKAROVA. The overall time was 0.63s faster than standard and with sectionals of 10.22, 10.45, and 10.92, this was a very good run and should be taken seriously.

YOUNG BLOOD

14.00 QIPCO BRITISH CHAMPION SERIES MAIDEN FILLIES STAKES

Plenty of coin on the table for this contest.

The Irish challenger SHEโ€™S QUALITY heads the field, by ACCLAMATION, sheโ€™s ran 3 times at the Curragh inc. 4th in a Gr3 two starts back and a very good second lto, the 3rd won a Gr3 on the weekend. Can she live up to her name?

ROMANTIC STYLE cost 550k at the yearling sales last year, by NIGHT OF THUNDER, sheโ€™s making her debut in deep waters today. Dam was a Gr3 winner and has produced a Listed winner with her first foal, RS is her second.

STAR MUSIC by ZOUSTAR made a pleasing debut 19 days ago where she was 3rd at Salisbury. She showed greenness that day and should improve nicely, Ryan Moore booked.

APEELING by SHOWCASING is a Whitsbury Manor Stud homebred, she was last on debut but not beaten far. The second has since ran third at Thirsk but third, GUTSY GIRL for Fellowes bolted up nto - we backed. There were whispers for this girl at the start of the season but theyโ€™ve no quietened and her drift stinks.

ASSEMA was behind STAR MUSIC on debut, she was given a pretty easy ride so youโ€™d expect she would improve nicely from that experience. By DARK ANGEL whose dam is a full sister to Gr2 July Stakes winner ANJAAL.

LOOKING FOR QUEEN by CHURCHILL o/o a Listed winner is the ride of Oisin Murphy for Kevin Ryan. Ran a creditable 4th on debut, the winner of that race has improved to be placed in stakes company but LFQ was well beaten by her.

HAPPY HADEDA by INVINCIBLE SPIRIT o/o a dual Listed winner made an ok start to her career in a hot maiden at Goodwood. Improvement is very much likely to come, not dismissed.

FARIHA by SHAMARDAL represents the powerful Shaggas yard. She ran a sedate race on debut, so not much to go on but improvement likely given her pedigree (she is a half to AL MUBHIR rated 105) - market watch.

The others need to improve a lot to be competitive today and are best watched.

Verdict: SHEโ€™S QUALITY brings the best form to the table by a country mile, itโ€™s obvious why they have travelled her as there is a good pot to pick up. On form (and price) it looks like this race is hers to lose.

That said, most of these fillies are only once raced and any amount of improvement can happen. So who are the ew value plays against the 8/11 Irish hot pot?

ROMANTIC STYLE is an interesting debutante but best watched especially this year for the stable! STAR MUSIC made an encouraging debut but ASSEMA was only a length off her and is triple her price so looks to have been seriously overlooked given her more than tentative intro to racing from Fahy.

RISK ON

Today is a really bad dayโ€™s racing, even the Newbury card leaves a lot to be desired, however we are there today (hence the delayed PRESS) so weโ€™ve tried to find some plays.

Given the apparent easy ride lto and the pricing differential with Hughesโ€™, we wouldnโ€™t put you off a small speccy poke at 28โ€™s on the Cox filly in the Young Blood section.

The other single we like is:

15.40 CLASSIC

Won so easily at Sandown on penultimate start. Was given either a stinker or a dubious ride lto at Newbury. Not top on ratings but the extra furlong might bring suit and he could improve past the field. Small bet at 11/4.
