Headline Roundup

Not much to talk about really hence the intern had a day off from writing the newsletter yesterday. I couldn’t give a flying f about the AW unless told to back one, most of its bent, but that said, I really, really would have liked to of seen some jumpers bumpers put on.

If like me AW aint really your bag, just tools down. Its good practice and no doubt your bank will thank you for it later when the proper action starts. One of the best but sometimes hardest ways to be a better gambler and make a real , steady income from the sport is to simply do nothing.

Let’s dive in.

Headline roundup

The BHA have had a shocker

Chelmsford’s Thursday evening meeting was abandoned at the final minute yesterday after a group of officials and jockeys deemed the conditions unsafe.

Racing was set to get underway at 17.30, with the first three races scheduled to be raced under flag fall rather than using the starting stalls.

However, racing was delayed for people to inspect the suitability of the track and shortly after the inspection, the evening was abandoned despite passing two official inspections earlier in the day.

Clerk of the course Andy Waitt shared how frustrated the course was at the events.

This was an absolute shitshow from everyone involved, not least for the fact the horses were parading for the first race before they made the decision. Cold weather or not, the lack of clarity throughout the evening was plain dumb and the lack of foresight from the BHA is baffling. Joanna Mason is spot on here:

 Fergal calls out Ffos Las

Fergal obviously had his money down on MAHON POINT because he was raging when Ffos Las was cancelled. In what was Britain’s only chance at jump racing this week, yesterday’s Ffos Las card was called off due to frozen water pipes in the saddling area despite the course being in a raceable condition.

In a lengthy piece, he said: "You're trying to tell me they didn't know there was no water there at 7.30? Do me a favour. Not once did he [Jones] mention to me there was no water in the stable yards."

"It's an absolute joke," he added. "One lad had to leave at 8am to ride in the first and the horses had to leave at 9am because there wasn't an inspection until 9.30. Racing was never going to be on.

"It's wasting people's time and they should be made to pay. If they have an inspection at 7.30 and they want to go ahead and do another inspection then they should be made to pay for transport. I'm going to send him [Jones] an invoice for the three staff who had to go out of the yard and the hour on the road and the hour coming back.”

The Welsh track had been confident to stage their seven-race card in the days leading up to Thursday, however, horse welfare around the frozen stable area was the nail in the coffin that saw racing abandoned, much to the heartbreak of Racing Twitter and Fergal with his (seemingly) Christmas bet. Ahh well…

A different ITV Saturday

As both Ascot and Doncaster have been called off on Saturday and our antepost on PIKAR in the bin, the all-weather is taking ‘centre stage’ on ITV Racing as eight races from Lingfield and Chelmsford are on terrestrial TV. Literally couldn’t think of anything worse… the newsletter is going to be fucking painful to write.

Four Class 6 and two Class 5 races are supplemented by one Class 2 and a Listed event on ITV4.

Kinda feel sorry for ITV who are scratching around for anything to show atm. I might help them out by getting the ‘Galop!’ racing board game out…ITV dm any time.

New John Durkan entries

Late news but in case you haven’t seen, seven have been entered for Monday’s rearranged Grade 1 John Durkan and GALOPIN DES CHAMPS is still the headline name of the field.

STATTLER is the big-name player that is not set to turn up as the National Hunt Chase victor was not declared - Willie Mullins will rely on GDC and HAUT EN COULEURS for the 2m4f contest.

FRENCH DYNAMITE was another who not entered, instead, Jessica Harrington’s LIFETIME AMBITION completes the line-up.

Elsewhere on the day, APPRECIATE IT, DYSART DYNAMITE, and JOURNEY WITH ME has been entered for the two-mile beginners Chase at 2:40 and BELLA SCINTILLA, third to PIED PIPER and KNIGHT SALUTE at Cheltenham in October, has been entered for the Listed Mares Novice Hurdle at 1:40.

Two months on

So it’s exactly two months to the day when the hammer was knocked down on BGP Capitals final purchase at the yearling sales, which doesn’t seem a long time but so much has changed, namely the yearlings. This photo is a good insight into what our week at the sales was like - flat out all day seeing as many horses as we possibly could and combing through catalogues and pedigrees, trying to find some rockets (at value prices (tough given the hot market).

The horses are nearly backed now and will shortly start cantering upsides. I’ve seen trainers working their yearlings weeks ago which I think is too early (they’re babies) so we’re happy to take out time but equally I cannot wait to hit the track next season with the BGP Capital owners. I’m bullish about this project. If were close to joining but were sceptical - watch what we do next season and then re-evaluate ;)
