Gm, Equinauts
The flat is most certainly (nearly) BACK. People are already arguing over the Guineas and we have taken a view.
Talking of flat horses, it’s CONSTITUTION HILL’s birthday today! Happy birthday big guy! 🎂
Let’s dive in.
HEADLINE ROUNDUP
🧠 ALBERT
As the curtains of the theatre of Cheltenham came down on another year, Ballydoyle’s were raised… and the markets moved without even a horse stepping foot on the track. The circus NEVER stops 🎪
Ballydoyle hosted their pre-season press day yesterday and all the chat was for the “unbelievably exciting” ALBERT EINSTEIN, who—if there was one Aidan wanted to hype up yesterday for stallion fee purposes—is him. Aidan stated he was so far ahead of the Ballydoyle 2yo’s last year that he wasn’t sure the rest were any good and remembers it as not a ‘funny’ time. But as we know, the others were VERY good, so what sort of beast do they have on their hands? 🤔
Well, despite a setback last year, Aidan still has him as their number one and will be targeted at the Guineas, despite his uncertainty as to whether he’ll get the mile, owed to the sheer speed he shows at home.
Our thoughts? First let’s look at his pedigree. He’s out of a sharp mare, but there is stamina on the dam side courtesy of the second dam. Old Coolmore stallion GIANTS CAUSEWAY, who finished second in the 2000 Guineas, was a proper miler and comes from his third dam. On the sire’s side, he’s by the ill-fated but mighty WOOTTON BASSETT, who is so, so versatile with his progeny getting sprinters, stayers and everything in between.
Given ALBERT is “a big horse”, we imagine that is reflected in his stride length and there is absolutely no reason he shouldn’t be able to get a mile. If he has the stamina to carry that speed—the speed Aidan so openly purrs over—and last out a mile, then we might just see something as electric as was on display in 2011 ⚡
Makes your hairs stand on end.
Now, we’re not saying he’s the new FRANKEL, but Aidan is certainly using the same language as Henry Cecil did in the early days.
FRANKEL is the GOAT, his ability unparalleled, but there will, one day, be one better… could it be big Albert?
The answer right now is—if there is going to be a better one, then it’s bloody likely it’s going to come from Coolmore, who have spent the last 50 years breeding equine perfection.
“But, but Aidan hasn’t won the Guineas since 2019” we’ve seen people cry on X. Just take a look at what they’ve sent to the race in recent times—AUGUSTE RODIN and CITY OF TROY used it as prep for the Derby, big, slow LUXEMBOURG in ’22 who ended up going to the Arc before winning the Irish Gold Cup, and LITTLE BIG BEAR in 2023 who was a Group 2 horse at 6f at best.
THE LION IN WINTER should have been a Guineas horse but they wrongly thought he was a stayer—we were very, very vocal about how badly they campaigned that horse.
Bar THE LION IN WINTER who, for whatever reason never lined up, Aidan simply hasn’t had the ammo. This year, he probably does, so laugh at their record at your peril ⚠️
⚔️ BALLYDOYLE BATTALION
Of the rest, Ballydoyle look stacked again, and while ALBERT EINSTEIN has stolen the headlines, there are plenty of others worth noting. As always, it’s a blend of proven class and unexposed talent, with Aidan typically keeping cards close to his chest at this stage.
The key takeaway from the press day? Strength in depth… There are multiple Guineas, Derby and Oaks types within the ranks, and while not all will make it to their intended targets, the sheer volume of quality means they are almost guaranteed to have a major say in the Classics.

🇫🇷 MORE WOOTTON BASSETT
From ALBERT EINSTEIN, to one WOOTTON BASSETT we actually have seen, the French racing scene may have unearthed a filly of real Classic potential following the striking debut of HARISSA at Chantilly yesterday.
Sent off a well-backed favourite for a mile newcomers’ contest, the daughter of Wootton Bassett travelled with notable ease just behind the pace before quickening smartly to settle matters in the straight. Once asked to go about her business, she showed a sharp turn of foot to draw clear in mouth-watering fashion, ultimately winning with something in hand and leaving the impression that this was a performance well above the ordinary.
HARISSA'’s pedigree is nice. She’s out of the Group 3-winning juvenile KALAHARA, herself a half-sister to stakes winner SASPARELLA and descending from the outstanding broodmare OCCUPANDISTE, from the famed FALL ASPEN family.
Representing the powerful Wertheimer ownership and trained by Christophe Ferland, she is already being aimed along a Classic route, with races such as the Prix du Louvre pencilled in as a stepping stone towards the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches, while longer-term options could include the Prix de Diane. She’s certainly one to follow 👀
