Headline roundup

Mission (not) Impossible II

64 remain in Easter’s Irish Grand National with Cheltenham winner GAILLARD DU MESNIL set to re oppose MAHLER MISSION who crashed out in the lead of Cheltenhams National Hunt chase last week.

National Hunt Chase second CHEMICAL ENERGY is also entered and trainer Gordon Elliott thinks the Irish National will be the perfect fit. So, what about the MAHLER MISSION vs GAILLARD DU MESNIL rematch?

Well when MM crashed out at the second, he admittedly looked well on top despite BGP followers screams for GDM to start picking up (he was our big ante-post) so you’d imagine it’s going to be one hell of a race between the two again. But on MAHLER MISSION’s desperate fall in lead…I don’t think I’ve seen one bit of criticism towards MM’s jockey, Barry.

If I was on MM that day I’d be fucking fuming. He had an astonishing lead (1/3 in running).

Barry set a furious pace all race and had then string out like a mothers washing, a great ride in that regard, but then close to 4miles of relentless galloping Barry shoves MAHLER MISSION into the fence to skip a stride and go for a big one as of the adrenaline of seeing himself on the big screen, being oh so close to a Festival winner has made him so absentminded that he forgot the horse underneath him was running out of petrol very, very quickly. A 2miler, fine, go for the big ones the whole way round, but after 4 miles in the bog with that much of a lead, just take a pull, let him pop it safely and you’re away.

I truly don’t understand how pro jockeys can be so incompetent most of the time.

100k Ebor

Every single race at this years Ebor festival will be worth at least £100k this year. Woof.

Saturday in the Desert

On Saturday 16.35 COUNTRY GRAMMAR is looking to become the highest earning racehorse of all time this Saturday by winning the Dubai World Cup. He generally races in America but he has travelled over to the Gulf 3 times which has earned him a fucking massive $14 million.

Frankie Dettori will be doing the steering like he did when runner up in last months Saudi Cup. He was tearing home that day from a wide draw and unfortunately he has been drawn wide again for the big race. COUNTRY GRAMMAR will break from stall 14 of 15.

ANIMAL KINGDOM won from stall 12 but not other horse has won from a higher draw in 10 years.

The Dubai Sheema Classic races just before the big one 3 x Group 1 winner REBEL’S ROMANCE is back, last seen winning the Breeders Cup Turf with the Doyler on board. Buick takes over the reins on Saturday and he has a difficult field to tussle with.

Ryan Moore called the Juddmonte team and asked if he could ride WESTOVER and they duly obliged. A wide margin win in the Irish Derby last year but hasn’t quite hit the heights thereafter. SHAHRYAR was at Ascot last Summer finishing out the places but that was in the 1m2f Prince Of Wales Stakes, the 1m4f at Meydan May just be more to his liking.

And just before that at 15.10 some old friends line up in the Dubai Turf 1mile 1 furlong contest.

ORDER OF AUSTRALIA, SIR BUSKER, SHELIR and EL DRAMA are all running off massive odds. LORD NORTH ridden by Frankie, REAL WORLD ridden by Oisin and NATIONS PRIDE ridden by Buick are all in contention.

However...and this is a big however, leading the market are two runners from Japan who do so well when they travel their horses. DO DEUCE is their number 1 pick, he beat the highly rated Equinox in the Japanese Derby last year. EQUINOX is the ridiculously short favourite in the Sheema Classic, the next race.

Bumper preview

Chepstow

Two divisions of Chepstows mares bumper and they're very difficult to read, not least because they're all female.

Division 1

Headed by JJ's BETHKA who was highlighted on debut in a previous bumper preview. I thought she was going to win it at a big price but just couldn't reel in the eventual winner who was given an inspired front running ride by Connor Ring. That was annoying.

BETHKA would be the pick for this race had she not run so flat lto so inclined to take on. The same can be said for STRONG BELLE who ran a race full of promise on debut but then bounced next time. Either have the blood to win but I just don't know who'll show up.

The others all the way down to MIGHTY DUCHESS and SWEET CARYLINE can be discounted in my mind with preference for SWEET CARYLINE. I like her pedigree for this race but the only question mark over this expensive purchase is if Joe Tizzard has her wound up for today. He likes to take his time with horses so she might be out for a jog. That said, she's the blood pick.

Division 2

Headed by QUEEN ANNIE for Fry who loves winning bumpers and he's 2 from 2 in them at course this season. She went off fave on debut after Christmas so more as expected but the form for that race couldn't be working out better making QUEEN ANNIE defo the one to beat at odds on. I don't get why EDMOND is so short in the market, she's a young filly at 4 and hasn't run very well so far. Take on.

Olly Murphy is in great form atm and he runs Nick Brown's TINTAGEL QUEEN. Historical bumper success for both owner and trainer indicate this girl will be trying today but has she the blood to win it? In short, yes. I don't think the others can win.

Summary: I think SWEET CARYLINE (if trying) and TINTAGEL QUEEN are the ew plays at nice prices in their respective divisions.

Risk On

14.50 HASHTAG BOUM

Well related one for Ruth who'll do better over this further trip. With any improvement should be a knock in at 11/10.

16.10 LATITUDE

Mel rarely sends chasers to Ludlow and she's 1 from 3 so far. Her horse today is well-related (a half to ROARING BULL) and with any improvement from last time can win this today. Counting on improvement in a trappy race, small bet at 5/2.

I think ESPOIR DE TEILLEE in the Ludlow Hunter Chase is good 1x lev for any single.
