Equinties - Arc weekend part 1
Gm Equinauts
The regular readers among you will notice that we only preview the ‘big’ races at the weekend. By ‘big’ we mean BIG… the Listed or Group races.
This weekend has historically been hard work for us because there are just so many BIG races. The big one is tomorrow, the Arc, but tomorrow, at Ascot alone there are 4 black type race - 2x Listed race and 2x Group 3’s! That’s not to mention the big ones at Newmarket and the Curragh.
We can’t do them all.
But we are going to trust that Ascot will remain soft so will get stuck into the card there.
REMINDER: if you are a Weekender subscriber we will be sendin out a special Sunday supplement for the Arc tomorrow.
Let’s go again, let’s dive in.
HEADLINE ROUNDUP
LONGCHAMP GROUND
Well, Arc weekend is finally upon us. The French denouement of flat racing.
All the talk. All the hype. It starts now!
It’s only fair that, as it has been all week, that our news segment starts with the ground because it’s so key.
If you’re a wannabe punter who doesn’t factor in the ground, you’ll go bust.

So, as of yesterday, it was good to soft, good in some places after a sunny day and today is set to be more of the same. The ground will be quickening up all the time, but will it get all the way to good? Possibly, and that’s a pain in the ass because ff it was soft then that puts a few horses out of contention, making the punting easier - that’s what we want right!?
It’s not an excuse….ground, or more importantly pedigree, tells you which horses would or wouldn’t like soft ground. That’s why we make our money on the extremities.
As we’ve always said, good ground and salt will kill a punter.
So, it comes a lot more down to form, and long back form today
Our advice? Be sensible in these conditions. There’s good racing at Longchamp, Ascot, Newmarket, and the Curragh today. Ascot looks like more of a punting card if it stays soft, but Newmarket will be quickening up from good to soft and, unfortunately, so will Longchamp.
Days like today, although they are brilliant to watch, could produce bad memories if you don’t get the result you want. And it likely.
Like Neil Warnock once said: “By all means enjoy it, but enjoy it by being f*****g disciplined!”
